How to prevent ISP from identifying the router (Orbi LBR20)?

My mobile broadband ISP apparently is able to identify what kind of device the SIM card is used in. I am using the Orbi LBR20. Is there a way for me to configure the router so that this information is not retrievable by an ISP?

The ISP tries to circumvent European laws which prohibit ISPs from restricting Internet bandwidth to the use of particular devices. With other words, it should not matter  whether it is a smartphone or a router that is connected to the mobile network. Yet, the ISP in question actually limits bandwidth when they detect that a router is being used.

I'd like to fight back not on the legal front but on the technical front and learn how I can limit what details the ISP can see about my connection.

It is strange that the forum tools here don't have the Orbi LBR20 as a device to associate with this post. Isn't this the Netgear community? 🙄

Your device has an imei number (international mobile equipment identity)

In the most basic terms, that number is how that device is identified and recognized on networks regardless of SIM card. Its how they can tell its a mobile router. Its also how if something is stolen, it can be blocked on that ISP's network and others.

Can you change an imei number? sure (takes special equipment). But its not legal in most countries as it allows people to steal phones and modify them to work again.

So you're options are a bit limited if your country has laws banning that. You can get in contact with your countries internet protection (or whatever its called there) department and get them working on it.
