Here we go with the choose thing again. I have been updating my routers firmware for 20 years. It's NOT an OS update. It's a router. You would think that when presented with the message, new firmware is available, that it should be safe to update. That being said, I know that it's not the end of the world when it goes bad but honestly, I can't remember this happening as of recent with any router I've owned in the past.
As far as waiting for consensus on whether a patch is good or not, I mean seriously? I have to check out Netgears forumn first to make sure the patch is okay before I put it on? A week, a month? How long?

I have had the exact same issue. Firmware was updated. Satellites kept showing as disconnected. I ended up having to remove and resync them.
It is also resetting some of my settings every time ti configure them (enabling telnet, splitting the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz networks into different SSIDs, reset my static IP address settings...). Every time I reconfigure it, within about 20 minutes, they all reset again.
Firmware updates on the orbi have been a crapshoot since I bought it. I end up spending over an hour each time. I can upgrade my nexus 9k/5k/2ks at work faster and more reliably than this thing.

Did you power OFF both RBR and RBS for 1 minuted then power ON the RBR then RBS to see if the RBS would re-sync on it's own after the FW was updated?

For what it is worth..I am back up after 5 hours of time trying to solve. I have not had a drop since last night. I eventually got my satelitte working by hardwiring to my to base, paperclip reset, and then attempting to add satellite again. It said failed while attempting to add..but it showed up anyway. I have not tested to verify if the satelitte is even working correctly as of yet becauase I am still doing yoga and meditation to get over 1/2 my day being wasted yesterday...
The story got better after this though so I thought I would share since ..
Near my witts end yesterday , I sent Netgear a FB messenger asking where to get the last version of firmware. Over a full day later, I get a broadcast " A new firmware (2.50.38) was release on the update server ....." ....They didn't even read my request. Perhaps canned...Netgear is still pushing this crap build.
Anyways, hope this firmware holds up to Black Friday.

Did you find a fix for the seperate wifi bands automatically joining again? Mine did the same after applying this update - After working perfectly for 18 months. I set up the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands again and it works, but after a few minutes, it rejoins them. Painful, as not everything on my network can deal with band steering.
Ridiculous that we even have to go through the telnet solution in the first place, given not every product can cope with band steering, but then to reset it after you specifically disable it is just plain stupid. The option to turn it off should be in the UI. Basic sh*t!.

I'm having the same issue with 2.5.0.38. Also, after joining bands I see my upload speed over wifi went down from ~300Mbps to 30-40Mbps. Quite frustrating.
Is there a way to rollback to previous firmware?

I'm also having issues and want to roll back. Would someone please confirm that the prior version is: 2.3.1.60.
Thanks!

I also upgraded to this version then lost some of my home-automation capabilities. I also tried the telnet solution to rename the 5.0GHz SSID but it eventually changes back to match the 2.4GHz SSID. For testing I powered-off the satellite and separated the SSID's again, and they seem to be holding but I still have certain devices that won't work with my home automation. I'll have to attempt downgrading the firmware.
BTW I talked to tech support and they were essentially worthless. They actually had no knowledge of "telnet" or how to separate the SSID's. They just kept re-reading specs from the sales literature to me. I eventually said I'd deal with it and closed the case.

A factory reset of the RBR and RBS should have been tried at least before you went in and did the SSID separation. Seen odd issues like others after a FW update. Factory reset has fixed or resolved most of these oddities. This should be given one last resort try before resorting to unsupported methods.
I make it a personal habit to factory reset and setup from scratch when FW updates get applied. It's a personal decision, however I'd rather take the hassle up front first, then to troubleshoot odd problems afterwards if a reset hasn't been done. I at least know that from the get go, the system has a clean installation of FW and a clean slate of a configuration.
My system as been up and running for 5 days now.
