Odd ping spikes during online gaming (& streaming Netflix) with Orbi RBR50 - lag but no packet loss

My son's computer connects wireless to Orbi mesh 5G but he's having network trouble with online gaming. During games (CS Go/Rocket League/etc), he'll lag horribly which kills the experience. Router is Netgear Orbi (RBR50) in "router mode" with latest firmware (V2.2.1.210) Service is Verizon Fios Gigabit (no Verizon router, just the ONT). Speedtest at his system shows download speeds of 120-150 Mbps and 14ms ping.  I am connected hard-wire and do not exhibit the ping spikes.

What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials.

 

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?
What WPA security modes are you using?

 

Try disabling the following and see:
MIMO, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

If you updated to recent FW v.210, try enabling Daisy Chain. Some have mentioned that this seems to be working in reverse order, enabling means disabled actually.

What other wired devices do you have connected to Orbi? Does disconnecting wired devices have any effect on the latency you now see with gaming?

Bear with me, cursory knowledge of networking only.

I'm not clear what the ISP modem is - the Verizon ONT is bolted to the wall downstairs and I couldn't discern a model number.

Orbi is on main floor 50-60 ft. from this PC - stairwell physically located between computer & router but no electronics. 2 satellites hooked up on different floors (above/below). WiFi adapter nothing special, cheap $20 from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KZGZ2U6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) . I downloaded & reinstalled drivers, but the Windows 10 drivers haven't been updated in 2 years.

Regarding configuration, 2.4g is set to Auto-channel and its going to "9". Using an app I was able to detect pair of neighbors using channels 1 and 6. On 5g, the channel is set to 48 and shows "36+40+44+48(P)". Security setting is WPA2-PSK [AES]

Let me come up with a network map, something is fishy.  My main computer, hard-wired, is no longer reporting expected download speeds.  While going through the Orbi menus, I saw the following speeds: (I expect up to 860 Mbps on Verizon Fios Gigabyte service)

 

SpeedTest Results: 12-13-18

Download:525.65Mbps

Upload:858.53Mbps

 

but on retests, I have dramatically slower throughput.  Not sure why the huge drop, my daughter upstairs listening to spotify, but everyone else sleeping.  What gives?

Try setting 2.4Ghz to channel 11. 9 is a sub channel and not a primary channel. 

 

Try some of the suggestion when you get time.
