Orbi RBR40 will not connect to new Cable modem

We recently upgraded our cable to one gig. We have tried to connect our RBR40 to two different modems, a Netgear NightHawk, and an ARRIS SB8200. In both cases the modem successfully connected to our ISP, but we were unable to connect it to the Orbi. We've tried power cycling, rebooting, etc. We have not tried resetting, as I'd hoped to avoid going through the Orbi setup again. Is it possible to get an Orbi to recognize a second modem? Do I have to reset? If what we're trying to do is possible, I would appreciate any suggestions, as we have no idea where to go from here. TIA.

  • Hi all,

I really want to thank everyone who responded. All of your responses were very helpful, and I have saved them for future reference. Fortunately, after spending an hour and a half on the phone with our ISP yesterday, we were able to get connected using one of their modems. a Hitron. Wouldn't have been my first modem choice, but it's working, so we're going with it. The reason I was trying to avoid a factory reset is because I am visually-impaired and use a screen reader, and let's just say Netgear could do a much better job of making their product configuration screen-reader friendly. So resetting is always my absolute last resort. Anyway, thanks all for your very helpful input.

    Cheers!

  • What netgear modem were you trying to connect to?

Reason I ask is the SB8200 has 2x ethernet ports but the majority of ISP's only support 1 public IP address. Meaning only 1 device can be connected to it (simple put).

So if you had a PC connected to it to get it setup, you'd have to disconnect the PC, connect the modem to port 1, and follow the guide everyone listed prior.

Without knowing what netgear modem you had before, its tough to know if you had that same issue but you will with the sb8200

That would seem like the first thing to try, especially when you are playing with different  modems. Who knows which settings the router has picked up in that messing around?

Failing that, you could see if you can get the RBR40 to go through the Internet setup routine with the browser graphical user interface (GUI).

Remember, when setting things up, the order is important.

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

    • Turn off and unplug modem.
    • Turn off router and computers.
    • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
    • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
    • Turn on computers and rest of network.

  • Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and router been performed?
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
    Turn off and unplug modem.
    Turn off router and computers.
Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on computers and rest of network.

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? A complete pull of the power adapters for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch with a wired PC and web browser. https://kb.netgear.com/22697/How-do-I-install-my-NETGEAR-router-using-the-router-web-interface
Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200.

I would power OFF the ISP modem for 1 minute. Factory reset the Orbi router and power it off. Power ON the ISP modem and let it sync. Then power ON the Orbi router and walk thru the setup wizard again using a wired PC and a web browser.
Press the back reset button for 15 seconds then release.

Check with the ISP service to see if there is any special modem or router configurations needed to be setup on the RBR. Some ISPs may require this.
