Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

As an IT Operations team manager, thank you for the candor.  I am stuck in a dismal RMA process after hours burned on the phone, completing several factory resets to verify wireless radio is dead.  When I stated the router was abnormally hot I was given explicit instructions not to touch, to stay away, then asked to comit a factory reset later in the script.

Paid $30 for the express option on RMA.  I recomend to annyone trying Orbi be ready to return it to place of purchase asap if you experience problems.  I missed that window via Amazon.  They have me over the edge with bad customer service scripts, processed my $30 payment for express RMA and have sent no email to confirm RMA has been processed.  Without point of entry to review case online, initiate chat online to request status only route appears to be phone call and sit in queue.

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

Yes, you'll need to be at the Orbi router to make changes and test the suggestions out. They have helped others.

More that 30 feet appart. Can you be more exact on distance. 40 feet is good as well as I think i've seen others with 50 feet. I presume anything beyond that mabye too far as well. Depending upon building materials. Just make sure the distance is good. There seems to be a sweet spot for placement.

@bshure wrote:

Sorry. RBR20.

I tried all of the suggestions.  My house is 2400 square feet and the two units are more than thirty feet apart.  Wireless coverage of the house is great. It is not the problem.

I'm running the latest firmware. This was verified by support.

I see two or three 2.4ghz networks and no 5ghz networks at my house.

I wish I could disable the features you are suggesting, but I am away from home and I don't think the phone app allows me to make the changes you are suggesting.

Do you expect that your suggestions will make the problem go away?  It seems like a lot of people on the forum have tried and not had success.

I expected better from Netgear.

Thanks,

Bert

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

The cablemodem is an Arris SB6183 that has been running flawlessly for five years and the ISP believes that it is fine.

Lack of full remote management would have kept me from buying if I had known.

It satellite is less than forty feet from the master.  Are you saying that having the satellite too far from the master has caused devices connected to the master to lose connection to the internet? If true, another fatal flaw.

You are saying that the list of suggestions like changing channels and various settings have helped others with the dropped internet problem?  These problems have been in the forum for more than a year.  I tried some of them and I might try more when I return to the house.

My old firewall stayed up for years without rebooting and I could change features and settings without a reboot or loss of service.  I expected that a new device would be able to change settings with rebooting. Another reason for not buying.  My wife and I depend on the internet being solid and reliable.

Thanks,

Bert

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

Ok, just making sure if yoru modem was stand alone or was a combo unit.

wireless radio distance is not a fatal flaw, signal travel just depends on building materials and range that the wifi radios can do. Its a nature of wireless radio. it can only do so much. With in 40 feet should be good. Mines at 40 feet and works well.

Other issues maybe other near by wifi sources, maybe a device you have that out puts it's own wifi radio signals which can cause interferences.

Yes, suggestions mentioned have worked for others.

Full management in mobile apps has never been full featured. It's mostly basic. Any advanced management of features needs to be done at the routers web page. I never seen many other router mfr use full on mobile apps to manage there routers. Just basic things. You can enable Remote Management and use the IP address listed there after it's enabled to log into the routers web page from remote locations.

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

I had the same painful issue, with the connection dropping every hour or so... Obviously I tried resetting the router, I tried all the different setting combinations, I even blamed it on my ISP, until one day I decided to downgrade the firmware to the previous release 2.1.4.10, and since then... no more pain!!!!
2.1.4.16 is bugged like hell. everyone is experiencing problems, I don't understand why Netgear is taking so long to come up with a fix.
So my suggestion is: go to orbilogin.com and downgrade your firmware to 2.1.4.10.
My feedback.

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

when you upgraded to v.16, did you apply the FW and continue or did you factory reset the Orbi router and satellites and set up from scratch? Others have mentioned that they saw problems after upgrading to v.16 however doing a factory reset and set up from scratch solve there problems after the update:

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

first time around it was a direct update, with no reset, just because in the past year and a half I was lucky enough to never encounter any trouble, so I figured it would go smoothly this time too.

But it didnät, so I tried with a factory reset, like several times actually. I even ended up using the router alone with no satellites, just to see if the satellites were the cause of all my troubles, like a faulty satellite or whatever. But evidently it wasn't the case because it kept losing connection every now and then.

So after trying all the different settings with no luck, and after half a dozen factory resets I decided to downgrade to 2.1.4.10, and that did the trick. Not a single connection drop in 10 days!

Ok, good to know. Wondering if there is a FW to HW problem. Seen some with older Orbi HW exhibit more problems then with Orbi HW from newer stock.

You might try the new beta and see if your so inclined. Someone said it appeared in there FW udpate list in the UI. Some are saying the new beta is working much better then v.16. https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Looking-for-a-select-group-of-Orbi-Community-members-that-are/...

Hi All,

There is a new firmware released for RBK50. Kindly update the firmware to 2.2.1.210.

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

Not pleased with firmware push to my devices (thought I had this blocked).  Regardless my wireless SSID configuration was wiped out.  Before firmware update I had seperate SSID's in place for 2.4 and 5ghz networks. This was done to isolate known problem of devices jumping between 2.4 <> 5ghz networks too frequently.

I now appear unable to isolate SSID's for these networks after firmware (V2.2.1.210) was pushed.  I have an RBR20 with two satellites in wireless AP mode to isolate other problems and keep Wireless AP's and connected wireless/ethernet devices on same network.

Pushing firmware upgrades to customer hardware is lame, unless customers opt-in to automatic upgrades.

Reading these messages continues to make me feel better about switching to Eero.

My new network is fast and stable.

I can do all management from my phone, not a subset.

Phone support is awesome.

It doesn't have all the features of my old firewall, but the Orbi didn't either.

Cheers!

Spot on.  I just posted something similar about it being a bad system.  I'm no IT specialist, but i know my way around computers and let's just all be honest, setting up and troubleshooting a router shouldn't be this difficult.  I for one, would like to see better solutions that the typical suggestions, did you reset it, unplug it, etc.

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

I'm having the same issue - losing internet connection regularly, every 1-2 hours.  Strong wifi signal throughout.  Orbi worked great up until a week ago (don't know if that coincided with firmware update or not).

ISP came out yesterday to check it out and claims that everything on their end works fine.  Cable coming into the house works, but connection is lost when it gets to router.

No modem

Firmware:  2.2.1.210

Satellite is about 35ft from router

House is 4600 sq ft

Have rebooted countless times, done hard resets, etc.

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try disabling the following and see:
MIMO, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).
If you updated to recent FW v.210, try enabling Daisy Chain. Some have mentioned that this seems to be working in reverse order, enabling means disabled actually.

Having seen this post/reply countless times now, yes, I have done all those things to no avail.  Seems like a long recurring issue, even with the new firmware.  It's too bad, the Orbi worked great for me for a while, but the frequent disconnects all of a sudden make it unuseable for me.  I will be forced to find a replacement if this doesn't get resolved.

I am experiencing the exact same issue.  Using 2.2.1.210.

I need this firmware I believe for the Disney Circle integration, which works great.

Randomly, all of my Wifi Devices will lose internet access.  All physically connected devices continue to work fine.  If I pull up the orbilogin page, it shows the internet status as "good".  If I click on that, and then click on "Test", the issue resolves itself as part of the test, and all internet access is restored.  I think that the internet test button must be restarting a service of some kind.

Re: Orbi RBR50 Dropping Internet Connection Regularly

None of these suggestions make any sense whatsoever.  All of the Wifi devices are still able to communicate with each other, and with the Orbi itself.  This is obviously some kind of routing issue within the orbi, between whatever its doing with Wifi and the physical network connections.  Either there is a daemon/service on the router that is dying, and is reset by the Internet Connection Test done via the webpage, or some other buffer issue between those networks within the router itself.

I have tried disableing all of the satellites, and the issue remains, so it has nothing to do with daisy chaining, or any communications via the satellites.
