Trying to use RBR 50 instead of Verizon Router -Orbi RBR50 with 3 satellites

I currently have my Orbi setup in A/P mode and am using with my Verizon FIOS gateway router. I also have a subscription with Netgear Armor for Bitdefender. The system works fine in A/P mode, but I lose a lot of features through my NETGEAR subscription. See details in this post ...Which features are disabled on my NETGEAR router when it is set to AP Mode | Answer | NETGEAR Suppor...

When I open the Orbi app I am missing the parental controls and the Netgear security features in it. It is my understanding that if you have Verizon standalone Internet, which I do, the process is extremely simple to use your own router. I found this writeup on Verizon's community site which details how to set it up to switch to your own router...Using your own router with Verizon FiOS - Verizon Fios Community

Switching to your own router

So now you are ready to plug in your own router to the Internet! However, there is one final step you need to take on the existing Verizon router for a seamless transition.

Routers plugged into the FiOS network receive a DHCP lease. In simple terms, this is a temporary lease that allows the router to connect to the Internet. You have two options when swapping routers.

  1. Power off the Verizon router, unplug its Ethernet, and wait overnight before plugging in your own router.
  2. Log into the Verizon router, release the DHCP lease, plug the Ethernet into your own router, and then power it on. Your router will obtain a fresh lease and be connected immediately.

Here are the steps to release the lease from the Verizon router if you don't want to wait for the lease to expire.

First, login to the router at http://192.168.1.1/. The admin username and password are on the label attached to the router. Once logged in, follow the instructions:

  1. Click on the My Network icon at the top.
  2. Click Network Connections from the menu on the left.
  3. Click Broadband Connection
  4. Click Settings
  5. Scroll down and click Release under DHCP Lease
  6. Click Apply
  7. Disconnect the router immediately to prevent it from re-requesting a DHCP lease.

Once you have run these steps, immediately plug the Ethernet cable into the WAN port of your own router. Your router should now get Internet.

Has anyone in the community done this? If I switch my Orbi from A/P mode back to Router mode, will I regain the Netgear protection services (Bitdefender) I pay for. Will my Wi-Fi work better with the Orbi Router as a standalone and turning off the Fios Quantum Gateway? I am currently getting 200+ speeds and my FIOS connection is through Ethernet not Coax. Any help appreciated!!!

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT

Couple of options,

1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.

2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.

3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Try option #2 first.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I will admit I do not totally understand everything you have said however, I agree Option 2 is where I am trying to get to.  When you say "disable ALL Wi-Fi radios on the modem" do you mean on the Verizon Quantum Gateway? If so, I already completed that step when I set up my system initially following these instructions you refer to...https://kb.netgear.com/31100/How-do-I-set-up-my-Orbi-system-to-work-with-Fios.

Not sure how to do this step in your instructions..."configure the modems DMZ/Exposed Host or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem".  Is what you are referring to in this link...https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Trying-to-use-RBK50-instead-of-FIOS-router/m-p/1885585/highlig...

I assume you mean...

Enjoy.

Problem was solved. I had to put the old Verizon router back online and release the IP from the Fios routes admin console. Once that happened the Orbi could see the Internet.

One other thing that happened was the DNS IP's needed to be changed (auto populated by Verizon), as they also interfeared with the connection to the Internet. I just went with 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, which worked fine.

Greth

Is the above what you are saying to do??? Do I get to the DSP's by going into the orbilogin.net and changing my Orbi DSP's there along with changing my Orbi from A/P mode back to router mode?

Thanks so much!!!

No, on the Verizon modem there should be DMZ or IP Pass thru function. Check your ISP support pages or contact the ISP on the phone on how to configure this option for the Orbi router.

IF this user did this with his Orbi system connected to the Verizon router, then yes, you'll need to log in to the RBR and configure these specific DNS addresses while the RBR is in router mode.
