It's possible that apt-get disappeared in 4.1.7 or earlier, but I haven't used it in what seems like years so can't be sure, either way it's not there now 😞 God knows what else might be missing.
Is this an issue with 4.1.8-T5 or is it specific to my installation (which btw is very generic, only rootlogin add-on, and has always worked flawlessly apart from being slow) ?
APT is not included in the firmware by default on Sparc ReadyNAS. If you did a factory reset since you've last installed it, you'll need to install it again.
