Dears,
I have an issue with D6100 5GHz wifi.
I use Netgear for years (WNRL3500, WNDR4300, R7000, R8500). I know the software.
Normally every day I use R7000 which connects with my notebook at the speed of 867 mbps (5GHz). My ISP provides me 160 mbps, and I am able to reach that limit via wifi.
I was given a D6100, which I wanted to use as an AP, as it should provide me the same theoretical bandwidth.
I reset the device, upgraded the firmware to the newest version, again reset and set as AP. Wifi 5G was set in similar way as in R7000 (where I disabled radio at all for the test purposes - not to have any interferences). Encryption is WPA2 EAS. Notebook (Win10, Intel 7260 AC) connected on the level of 867 mbps, but the wifi speed is around 32 mbps, instead of around 160...
I checked different channels (36, 40, 44, 48, 149) - no changes.
When I disable encryption, I can reach 44 mbps.
I tried alternative options:
a) again reset and set as normal router (like R7000), disabling ADSL modem. Goes fantastic via LAN and 2.4, but again 5G gives the same real speed as previously.
b) I put the lan from cable modem (my ISP) to LAN into D6100 in order to make AP, as it is done in many other routers (so without using Netgear AP software function): no improvements.
c) I used the oldest available version of the firmware (just to check) - again the same poor results
d) I checked other computers (linux based, Intel 7260 AC) which works superb with R7000, but here sucks as well. I checked my iPhone 6s plus - the same results.
Can anyone tell me, what else I should check?
regards,
Dyz

Re: D6100 5GHz extremely slow
What modem are you using?
You've said you put the D6100 in AP mode, so what router are you running the function as a routing device?
If you're going modem----router-----D6100 and you hardwire into the D6100, what speeds do you get?
if your primary routing device is limiting the speeds, it doesn't matter how well you connect to the D6100.

Re: D6100 5GHz extremely slow
Hi,
Sorry, by mistake I put not precise information.
When I mentioned that I connect D6100 as AP (to LAN) I connect from my cable modem (from ISP, set permanently as a bridge) to my R7000 (router, Wifi set to off) and via LAN to LAN port in D6100.
R7000 is not limiting the speed. That device can easily handle 500 mbit line without any issues.
If R7000 with its own wifi is able to saturize my internet line (160mbps), it should be no problem to achieve similar result with configuration R7000 (as cable router only) and D6100 (as AP; which is AC1200: 300mbit + 867 mbit)

Re: D6100 5GHz extremely slow
What modem is it? model?
Firmware on the R7000? this is key as the R7000 is known to have firmware issues.
If you're going modem------wan port on R7000---lan port on R7000----wan port on D6100 What speeds do you get with a computer connected to the lan port on the D6100?

Re: D6100 5GHz extremely slow
ISP modem: set as BRIDGE - Cisco ESP3925
Router Netgear R7000: FreshTomato 19.3
D6100: latest original Netgear firmware
Full speed of my internet line is 160mbit
I got 160mbps on: R7000 (LAN and 5GHz), D6100 (connected as AP, computer connected to D6100 via LAN)
Wifi connection to D6100:
2.4 GHz - max c.a. 78 mbit (which is ok, as the channel is 20Mhz)
5.0 Ghz - max 32 mbps (set in the fastest mode in the firmware settings)

It seems, that you cannot edit your own post...
It is Cisco EPC3925

Re: D6100 5GHz extremely slow
sorry, holiday time and not at home.
If you go Cisco EPC3925-----D6100 in router mode, do you pull full speed?

Re: D6100 5GHz extremely slow
Hi,
Yes, I am able to obtain c.a. 155 mbps via LAN.
Via 5GHz it is still the same - a slow turtle...
QoS of course is not defined. WMM is on. I checked with 'off' - the same results.

Re: D6100 5GHz extremely slow
maybe you have a bad chip/card for the 5ghz side. If you're outside of warranty, potentially you could open it up and see if an antenna came loose.

Re: D6100 5GHz extremely slow
Dear Plemans,
I followed your advice and disassembled thet router.
Detached and attached antennas, checked mounting (wifi card is firmly mounted with 2 screws as in notebooks). No improvements. No suspicious points visible.
Thank you very much for your will of helping me. It seems, that this toy is affected and I need to get used to it 😞
Luckily, I paid c.a 7$ for that, so not a big loss, except my and your time...
Regards,
Dyz

Might be why it was $7? 🙂
Sorry, wish I could help more.
