DNS>PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error since latest update
Model R6400, firmware v1.0.1.74_1.0.48, Windows 10, ethernet connection
Since I updated the firmware, I have been getting DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN errors when I open up browsers and go to webpages. Sometimes, after 2 seconds, the webpage will load, but sometimes I have to hit the reload button repeatedly, and sometimes nothing works. It's inconsistent. I also have two apps, weather and radar, that sometimes load and sometimes don't.
I have:
Reset/flushed DNS
Reset Winsock
Turned off the computer
Rebooted the modem
Rebooted the router
Restarted the computer
Still getting the error. Is it possible to update again, maybe something didn't go right the first time? Is it possible to use a prior firmware version that did work? Any other suggestions?

Hey,
I enabled IPv6 on the router. Seems to have fixed this.
Cheers.

Hi all. I too was plagued by the DNS issue on my AC1750 Smart WiFi Router(R6700v3) using Windows 10 and have posted previously in this thread. The version that broke mine was R6700v3-V1.0.4.120_10.0.91. I tried downgrading back to R6700v3-V1.0.4.118_10.0.90 which is the version that came with my router and was working perfectly , resetting to factory defaults, and combinations thereof with no luck. So, I went out and bought a TP Link AX10 Wifi Router which has been rock solid. My return period for the Netgear AC1750 had passed so I was stuck with keeping the Netgear. Didn't want to try and sell it with the DNS issue.
I did keep checking for Netgear firmware updates. Netgear then released R6700v3-V1.0.4.122_10.0.95. I upgraded the Netgear to that version, did a factory reset, and voila. DNS issues were fixed! I'm just saying that this worked for ME on my specific Netgear model. I was happy with my TP Link so I decided to sell the Netgear for $40 just to recoup some cash. Even though MY problem got fixed, I know it hasn't for others. I'll never buy Netgear products again.
Good luck!
- WinancyApprenticeHi Frothy333
I bought a TP-Link and loved it too, until the ethernet port went bad. Fortunately still in the return window. Now I have an Asus which is great except it doesn't play well with my Kasa smart plugs for some reason. They will go offline randomly both in the app and when voice controlling with Alexa.

I gave up on using this error b/c of the issue where firmware version R6700v3-V1.0.4.120_10.0.91 broke DNS. Downgrading and doing factory resets didn't work. Wound up getting a replacement TPLINK AX10 wireless router that's been flawless.
However, I still have this Netgear router that is past store return period. I would like to sell it but can't b/c I know of the flawed DNS issue.
I see that Netgear just released firmware version Firmware 1.0.4.122 with "security updates" with no mention of the DNS issue or if this firmware fixes it.
Does anyone know if Firmware 1.0.4.122 fixes the DNS issue? Anyone tried?
Thanks

I also had the DNS errors with firmware v1.0.4.118_10.0.90 tht was fixed by downgrading back to v1.04.106_10.0.80.
I saw the firmware
V1.0.4.122_10.0.95 and I updated a couple of days ago. At this point I have NOT seen any of the DNS lookup errors that occurred before. Hopefully this fixed the DNS errors. I will post back if the errors pop up again.Curious. I have the X6 R8000, and have the 1.0.4.68 and minimal DNS errors. But the best version I can do to upgrade to is 1.0.4.76_10_1_82 (why the convoluted versioning?)....why is this so different from others reported?

Planned obsolescence for sure. DDWRT or Tomato for me before I fork out for new hardware. Can anyone here recommend one over the other? Thanks!I use DDWRT on my Netgear R6400v2 and Netgear R7800 and am very happy running the latest build 47822.
If you start with DDWRT it is advised to read the forum guidelines full of helpful pointers:

Netgear - are we still waiting for this firmware fix for the Nighthawk R8000 X6 ?? It's been a long time since I've heard anything about this issue progressing...
- mkxTutor
Turned my 3 Netgears into access points.
Not buying Netgear products anymore..
This is effectivly a "Planned obsolescence" causing people to buy new products.

mkx I don't blame you. My new Asus router works just fine....well, other than the fact that it's not playing well with my 2 year old TP-Link Kasa mini smart plugs. Goes offline, local only, works ok, randomly. I purchased some brand new plugs but haven't had time to set them up and see if they work.

I'm getting the same DNS behavior. I hate to roll back the firmware b/c they said the update was critical. But, short of going to get a new router, the roll back will be the only choice.

"The choice is yours. Put up with the DNS errors you get and feel comfortable that lightning will not strike you. Or, like many other users, roll back to the previous firmware and run the risk that you may be the first person on the planet to see this security instructions."Third choice....refuse to put up with the Netgear BS and go out and purchase a new router. Worked for me!

Where did you read that? Which router do you own?
The Release Notes for the new firmware on the R6700v3 (see above) say that the new firmware "Fixes security vulnerabilities".
It says nothing about "critical".
Netgear, like other IT houses, never reveals what security vulnerabilities it hopes to fix. If it told you that, then the nasty people out there will know which unfixed vulnerabilities they can attack.
The "security vulnerabilities" term can mean many things. Often it means that some academic buried in a cave somewhere has cooked up an arcane exploit that can sneak into network devices in strange circumstances. These security vulnerabilities may not have been seen in the real world.
The choice is yours. Put up with the DNS errors you get and feel comfortable that lightning will not strike you. Or, like many other users, roll back to the previous firmware and run the risk that you may be the first person on the planet to see this security instructions.

I have R6700v3 and the same problem ever since I updated to V1.0.4.120_10.0.91. The DNS queries fail consistently.
- DuncStar1AspirantBeen seeing this in the browser with my Nighthawk R8000, v1.0.4.76 and the prior firmware version, but only on my work laptop. So was initially convinced it was related to the endpoint security and intrusion detection software installed. That is until I ran a Wireshark trace, and saw corresponding DNS refusal responses from the router! I feel sorry now for all the abuse I gave our IT support! 😇
Looking forward to seeing this fixed really soon! - mkxTutor
R6700v3 1.0.4.118_10.0.90 , same DNS issues.
Happens on multiple PC's and mobile devices.
This problem occurs on TWO R6700v3 routers on different locations and with multiple devices.
I have downgraded to the previous version 1.0.4.106_10.0.80 and it prectically fixes this but I still get those errors once in a while.
- mkxTutor
It appears that there is a new firmware out Version 1.0.4.120 and it was pushed for update to the router.
First impression is that the DNS works better, but I still get the unresolved page from time to time and the pages do load after a wait of a couple of seconds..
This issue was not fully fixed.
*R6700v3
- WinancyApprenticeI didn't have patience to deal with this issue for over a month. I bought a new router. I probably should have kept the Netgear one but I was so disgusted, I threw it in the trash. It was 5 years old though, so it got plenty of use.

Netgear has made me go out and purchase another brand after this last, failed, useless firmware update on my R6400V2 wi-fi router. It's not even listed on their drop down choice to talk about it. Buh bye Netgear. You suck, Bigly. Firmware upgrade 1.0.4.118 is a disaster. What a mess. Not buying anything Netgear from now on.

What did you buy? I made the mistake of buying a TP-Link AX3000 and after one month, the WAN port on the router failed. My modem showed internet working, but the light that shows data transferring was out. After plugging the modem directly into the computer, the internet worked fine. When I went into the TP Link dashboard it said there was no WAN connection, when in fact, there was. Thank goodness I bought it on Amazon and it's still in the return window!!!

I have been contacted to test a fix but I am a business trip and cannot download or flash the fix from engineering. So for those waiting, there may be a fix coming out shortly.
