Could I add an access point to this router to create a small mesh?

The R6230 is a basic router from 2017, around the time that Mesh appeared.
There is nothing to prevent you from adding an access point and using the same SSID and password for the wifi, but it will never be a Mesh system. That depends on the router and AP talking to each other.

Re: Netgear R6230
No really a true mesh and adding an AP, would need to be on separate channels far apart from what the main router uses. And AP units tend to be ethernet connected to the main host router.
