Duo v2 with awful screen refresh/data transfer/permissions problem - related??

Duo v2 with awful screen refresh/data transfer/permissions problem - related??

I've had a ReadyNAS Duo v2 for several years now. I'm using it on a home network with several Windows PCs, and as a media player with a smart TV. Used to work brilliantly for me, but for a good few months it's been giving me a load of grief. No changes have been made to the setup that would account for it. Symptoms are as follows:

  1. If I open a Window Explorer window, it can often take about 20-30 secs to populate the window (watching the green status bar creep slowly across the top!). Other times it populates more or less instantly, as it should (there seems to be no logic as to what it will do; eg size/number of files in a particular folder).   Checking a folder with a few hundred photo thumbnails? - just forget it; it will never fully refresh.
  2. I use Mozilla Thunderbird (v38.3.0) as my email client, and store all its data files locally on the ReadyNAS (in order to be able to use Thunderbird from any computer). Again, this used to work like a dream; but it's a nightmare now. It takes forever to check and download mail and resync itself, during which time the keyboard is locked; and every few minutes while using email, the program just locks up for 10-20 seconds, leaving me watching Window's little blue timer circle whatsit spinning. It always comes back to me eventually but it is so tedious (unworkable). Originally I thought my whole problem was a Thunderbird issue, as that's what affects me most; but apart from anything else, I've had extensive support from someone on a T'bird forum and he concluded that wasn't the issue.
  3. When I'm using my laptop, I regularly get read/write error mesages from the NAS. Subfolders with short filepaths (say two subfolders, total 50 characters) reproducibly work fine, but others with longer filepaths (say 4 subfolders, total still only 50 characters) usually don't; giving me messsages like "You don't have permission to save in this location - Contact the administrator to obtain permission". Documents (Word/Excel etc) will often open as read-only (sometimes pre-warning me that another user already has the document open, which is a lie!); whereas that same document will opens fine on the desktop. This particular issue happens only with the laptop, not with the desktop, and regardless of whether it's on wi-fi or hard-wired network. It's been suggested to me that it could be caused by Office processes not closing down properly and generating files which exceed the maximum path length?

I realise that the above problems might be unrelated but I report them anyway... Also, as an FYI, the NAS works perfectly OK when streaming video or audio.

Having just read another (related) thread in this subforum, from CougarFan, I've pre-empted a likely response(!) by running NasTester, and got the following results (they don't seem too bad to me?):

NAS performance tester 1.7 http://www.808.dk/?nastester

Running a 400MB file write on P: 5 times...

Would be incredibly grateful for any help here!
