Model 312 (2 drive) to Model 314 (4 drive) Upgrade

Model 312 (2 drive) to Model 314 (4 drive) Upgrade

We currently have many ReadyNAS 312 devices – each with two disks and operating as a RAID 1 configuration but configured as X-Raid..

We want to replace these units with ReadyNAS 314 devices. We do not want to have X-RAID capability enabled.

I believe the correct sequence to do this is

  • Make sure that the firmware in the 312 and 314 devices are at the same level – the most recent 6.4.0 firmware level.
  • With both devices powered down, move the current 312 disks to the 314 in the identical slots.
  • Power on the 314 unit
  • Using the Admin panel go to Volumes and change the X-Raid configuration to Flex-Raid
  • Establish other elements of the configuration – IP address, etc.
  • After the system is operational and seems equivalent to the old system, power down the ‘new’ 314 device and insert two more disk in the remaining slots.
  • Power up the 314 system and using the Admin panel configure the two new disks to a new volume with RAID 1 capability.

Is this sequence correct?

Aside from backing up the data, is there something else that should be done?

As a secondary question, would the configuration file for the 312 unit be able to be read/used by the 314 unit? If so it will help as we deploy these new systems.

You don't need to power down the 314 before adding the 3rd and 4th disks. You can add those while the NAS is on.

The configuration file should work, I think. Note though that the OS, configuration etc. is stored on the disks. So you should need to only do a few config tweaks after moving the disks across (if anything). Obviously you will need to disable X-RAID either before moving the disks across to the new chassis or afterwards to do the switch to Flex-RAID.
