OS 6 problems need subforum
Had a quick look - does not seem to be a forum to discuss OS6.
I've just got a 316, and I now see why there are so many complaints - the GUI is appalling.
In 2 hours I've encountered the following:
Impossible to access the NAS using any method until I had activated a DHCP server on my LAN - the NAS did not use the default 192.168.168.168 IP for some reason.
email alerts for successful backups even though set to only alert when errors - I know this is a well known problem.
Hopeless config backup
1 - the backup failed to recognise that I had deleted the default shares and put them back.
2 - the protocols I had activated for each share where gone - just left with rsync, and I could not reactivate smb - the toggle switch would not stay on. I had to recreate all of the shares from scratch.
3 - as soon as I tried to include volume in the backup, it failed with an error saying the zip file would have been too big.
Backup
Impossible to untick "Remove deleted files on source" once a backup is changed to rsync - need to changed to another backup type, untick the box, then change it back to rsync
The GUI deleted 6 of my backup tasks in one foul swoop after I made changes to one backup task.
Raidar does not show any information about disks, volume, temperature, fan
Security certificate issue with browsers impossible to fix after nas is renamed
I really dont want to open up support tickets for all of this - is there any way Netgear is gathering feedback for firmware improvements?

- GovnahAspirantMy advice, send it back for a refund and move on. I wasted days troubleshooting my RN516, one of the worst purchases I have made in some time. The final draw for me was purchasing apps via the genie+marketplace that would fail to install, absolutely infuriated me!!!!!

Did you have this issue on 6.0.8 or on older firmware? Likewise for other issues you have mentioned.vandermerwe wrote:

There is some work needed on config backups: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=70133&p=398368#p398368vandermerwe wrote:

What changes? Also what web browser and version are you using? Were the backup jobs still not there after clearing your web browser cache (e.g. Temporary Internet Files in Internet Explorer), closing your web browser then reopening the Dashboard?vandermerwe wrote:

That's a known issue.vandermerwe wrote:

The developers read some of the threads on the forum. Support cases can be useful. Public betas (there haven't been any of these for ReadyNAS OS yet) are another good opportunity to give feedback.
Where possible you should provide detailed easily reproducible steps so issues you report can be easily verified. - vandermerweMasterThe failure to find the Nas was with 6.0.4.
I basically had to factory default twice and activate a dhcp server before I could access the GUI.
Config backup is very poor, it is inconceivable that these problems were not obvious to the developers during testing before release.
The backup jobs were gone, IE and chrome. Did not empty cache. Changed backup type from nfs to rsync.
Unfortunately I have become dependent on rsync pull functionality which is not easy ( for me anyway) to use with the other manufacturer's Nas units. Both synology and qnap require Linux command line work.
This, and the forum support, outweighed the disadvantages for me.
What concerns me is that, if the GUI is so poor, is the unit going to alert me to problems and maintain my data reliably.
The GUI does not inspire much confidence in what it's directing. - vandermerweMasterI have also discovered that the facility to add a disk to an xraid2 volume and specify whether it's for volume expansion or dual redundancy is also not present. Do I understand correctly that I need to:
1 Change to flex raid
2 specify raid 6
3 change back to xraid2
Can I do all this and keep volume intact and avoid multiple resyncs? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

That is an old build built months ago, I think. So it could have been fixed since then. I think the I.P. should show on the display at the front of the NAS when the display is active.vandermerwe wrote:

The NAS uses md RAID with the BTRFS filesystem on top. BTRFS has some nice improvements over EXT4 which was used in the older devices including some reliability improvements.vandermerwe wrote: I have also discovered that the facility to add a disk to an xraid2 volume and specify whether it's for volume expansion or dual redundancy is also not present.
Hopefully this feature will be added in a future release. It is a great feature in 4.2.x. - vandermerweMastermdgm, I certainly hope your optimism turns out to be justified
- vandermerweMasterFor what its worth, I submitted a list of the problems I've described as a support request.
The one feature in OS6 (present in previous Frontview software) that I haven't tested yet is the deferred scheduled shutdown when there are queued backup tasks. Has anyone tested this? - vandermerweMasterSupport are trying hard:
Security certificate error solved. I needed to go into the https settings and change the IP address to the readynas IP address. Tis seems to regenerate the key and the certificate is then available for addition to the trusted root certification folder. This works for me as I use fixed ip addresses.
Support suggested an OS reinstall for the other issues. This has not made any difference, in fact now config backup fails to download zip file if "everything" or "volumes" are selected; and the zip file downloaded without these does not restore when selected for a config restore. I simply get a non-specific error message about a server error.
The volume bar in the overview tab is also problematic, the blue bar is longer than the clear box it is presumably meant to partially fill up. Does not look particularly good and is yet another little bug I guess.
I have also noticed that the power timer resolution is only hourly , unlike 4.2.24 and 4.1.12 where more precise times can be set. Again, not critical, but a step backwards I think.
Support have not said anything about the email notification for backups where successful backups generate emails when I have selected to only receive emails about errors. - vandermerweMasterAnother email alert issue.
OS6 emails about volume capacity utilisation at 70% and 80% ( and presumably 90% although I'm not there yet) every time the unit powers on. This has never happened with Frontview firmware - there was a single notification and that was it.
It is impossible to untick the volume tick box under Alerts, as is the case with disk failure and power. I can disable disk full alerts though.
OS6 also emails about every power on and every power off and it's impossible to stop this.
I'm now receiving 9 unnecessary emails from the unit every day. - vandermerweMasterConclusion:
Netgear support have acceted that there are known issues and that I will need to wait for the next firmware - but offered no reassurance that the next firmware will actually solve the problems.
