Readynas 104 out of memory 390, won't boot anymore in normal mode

After facing same/similar problem after upgrading to 6.4.1, see https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/Readynas-104-won-t-boot-Error-354-out-of-memory... NAS ran ok for about a month after (upgrade to 6.4.2 and then) factory reset.

But now the dreadful OOM 390 appeared again.

As mentioned in the other topic, after a lot of trials and (beta) fw upggrades, I did backup (data + conf), factory reset and restore backup to (try and resolve) the issue as proposed.

Summary config: basic: 2x1TB, no apps, no AV, but snapshots (daily) + COW enabled.

AFAIK, there was since then no real change in data yet (TBC).

But what I see now in System/Volumes is that snapshots (28 currently) apparently take quite some space already, which I wouldnt expected if there were no data changes:

data ; 1.20 TB

Snapshots: 7.97 GB

Free: 2.43 TB

Apparently also another user faced the issue again after the factory reset: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/Readynas-102-extremely-slow-after-update-to-6-4...

Also send logs to mgdm on request

Is the fan speed reported correctly in the UI?

Can you try 6.5.0 Beta 2?

Fan speed is reported and same as in logs. If its correct is hard to judge: 803 RPM (T = 61 C). Seems quite low RPM. Before it was usually around 1300 RPM (from logs), so 70% faster. But dont know if its under reporting or fan is really running that slow. It also doenst make a lot of noise.

Can you try 6.5.0 Beta 2?

Are there any fixes which might influence the problem? Cause a bit reluctant, now that it is still accessible in RO, dont want to loose that too. Am first preparing for another extra backup for safety before doing anything else. And just an upgrade or also factory reset again?

Is the device running hotter than normal?

From memory, the number does seem higher now, but hard to tell as I was not really tracking it. HD temps are quite a bit lower: +- 40 vs 60 C for CPU Is the temp also somewhere in the logs dumped via RaidAr, so I can check? I found the HD temps in the logs, but didnt immediately find CPU temp.

You can see the CPU temp when you look at the web admin page.

Euh yes thats where I got the first numbers I reported from 😉

As I dont have saved webpages, wanted to check dumped logs I had to see if the temp had changed/increased.

But seeing your answer, I guess the CPU temp is nowhere in the logs.

So cant tell for sure if temp really is higher.

Any idea about the normal T and RPM range?

Had been running in RO mode for the whole time.

Rebooted once again in normal mode and now there is different behavior:

NAS boots and becomes visible in Raidar.

Tried downloading logs, but that now failed after a while.

When trying again it said not a valid password.

After a while NAS dissapears from Raidar.

So far similar to before, but could usually still download some logs.

But now, there is nothing on the display, so no OOM message.

Device does seem to keep responding to ping requests, but for the rest nothing. 😞

Re: Readynas 104 out of memory 390, won't boot anymore in normal mode

Another update.

Waited for final 6.5.0 release and did the upgrade in RO mode (without factory reset first, so in 6.4 prob situation).

After firmware update, reboot, system hangs booting 93%.

Waited a long time and then shutdown (pulled power).

Rebooted in RO mode, that still seems ok, pfhew.

In RO, rebooted via RAIDar, in normal mode again.

Shows up in RAIDar Sytem starting up..., NAS OSD progresses till 99%, then dissapears in RAIDar and then OSD shows out of memory 330 after a while.

So another version, another OOM #, but still same problem.

In this case RAIDar doesnt reach/show the buttons to Download logs

Tried it a few times, and behavior is not fully consistent.

Sometimes it hangs a bit earlier sometimes a bit later, but always around 90%.

Sometimes even seems to pass the booting, RAIDar then shows the buttons, but log download fails and also login to Admin page fails and then after a while also dissapears from RAIDar, but no OOM 330 message in this case, but NAS not responding regardless and hard poweroff needed.

This last case only happened a few times after a hot boot, from RO mode, not yet from cold boot.

In RO mode still able to get logs.

So guess its back to factory reset plan and hope it works and keeps working for 6.5.0.
