So I turned on my new 316... 6 drives in it. Appears that it will take 24 hours to create/rebuild the volume (although I am able to copy data to it).

It's currently using x-raid2 ( I didn't have a choice ).

Now, I've read that encryption needs to wipe the volume (this was a random post and not anywhere in any documentation).

So I wonder if that's true, and why I wouldn't have had an option to do this from the beginning. Now it seems I have to wait for it to rebuild and then re-do this?

You will need to destroy the volume, which you can do before the build is complete.
1. Disable XRAID
2. Destroy volume - disks will be wiped.
3. Re-enable xraid (you may have to do this after you have created the new volume.)
4. Create a new volume - select disks you want to be in the volume and create a new volume. In the create dialog box you will see a tickbox to enable encryption.

OK, that's good to know. Now, once I build an encrypted volume... can I add disks or replace disks to that encrypted volume?

You can expand an encrypted volume as with a normal volume.
A word of caution:
A backup is recommended before expanding a volume, especially vertical expansion (replacing an existing disk with a larger one). You need to ensure that your data is backed up to another location (preferable another encrypted volume on another NAS)

I had 6x2TB drives that were encrypted with Raid 6. At some later point I upgraded the 2TB dirves to 4TB drives one at a time. Each drive took about a day to sync back up to array. When the last 4TB drive was added and synced to array the system then automatically increased the volume size.

PS. You will also need a USB key to store the boot encryption key on, which will need to be inserted when booting. You should dismount it from the web interface before removing it.

PPS. You may want to test writing and reading to your system as it sits now so you can compare how fast / slow it is compared to encrypted drive in terms for disk writes/reads. I wish I did that.

PPPS. hehe, make sure to update your firmware to 6.1.6 [RC10] (And do a factory reset which will delete all existing data on your whole device) as a minimum while you still have a system with nothing on it
