25Mbps Rate Limit

I have a client who has an RBR50 system, running the latest firmware, one unit acting as the router with two satellites around hose house for his tablets and cell phones. He gets good coverage and great speed all around the house. The same was true with his laptop, at least up until a few weeks ago when his laptop all of a sudden slowed down. He has the capability of being hardwired into the router as well as connecting wirelessly with his laptop. No matter which method I use when testing, I'm consistently getting no more than 25 Mbps download. Doing a speed test it starts out near 100 Mbps for a split second, then it appears to "throttle down" to 25Mbps very quickly.

If I plug directly into his modem though, I'm getting 100Mbps, which is what his internet bandwidth is. Curiously enough when I bring the same laptop to my shop I am able to get well over 100 Meg (I pay for 1Gbps) as well  We have tried resetting the Orbi router, as well as all satellites, verified firmware was up to date, really not sure what else there is to try.

It's almost as if the Orbi is rate limiting this particular system, but ONLY this system as everything else gets full speed. Any other device is able to get almost a full 100 Mbps anywhere in the house, the only device that is capped at 25 Mbps is this laptop. Except when the laptop is plugged in to any other router or plugged into the modem directly, at that point it gets full speed.

What is driving me nuts is the same as true with both ethernet / hardline as well as Wireless in this laptop. 25Mbps no matter which connection method, when connected to the Orbi.

I poked around in the settings and found traffic management, which is turned off. So I'm really at a loss for what it might be. It feels like it has to be something silly, but based on everything I have looked at I'm not sure what else I am missing.

For the time being, I have inserted his old Netgear Nighthawk router in between his modem and the Orbi system (with the Orbi WAN connection plugged into the Nighthawk, just like it was any other device). When I plug the laptop into the the Nighthawk, it's getting full speed. The only reason I still have the Orbi on is because all the other devices in the house need the Orbi satellites in order to get signal (as the Nighthawk just doesn't have the signal range to hit all parts of the house). The Nighthawk "in the middle" is basically my workaround for just his laptop alone until I figure out what's going on with the Orbi.

Anyone have any thoughts?

  • What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or may not be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

FURRYe38 thanks for the quick reply.

Wouldany of the items you mentioned have an impact on hard wire connection to the router?

I tried disabling the wireless adapter, using only the Gigabit ethernet connection into the router, and I get 25Mbps. No wireless whatsoever.

That's what got me thinking there is something that is rate limiting applying to this specific device in Orbi. When I bypass the Orbi router and plug straight into the modem, full speed. Same when I have the modem (Netgear CM1000 cable modem, by the way) plugged into a Netgear Nighthawk router, full speed if I route through that too.

It literally only slows down when this laptop routes through the Orbi, doesn't matter if it's wireless or wired, 25Mbps tops either way. All other devices, full speed.

Internet service is 100x10 (small cable network called Rainier Connect).

Something is wrong with the RBR seems like.

Do a factory reset and setup from scratch. Power OFF the ISP Modem for 30 seconds, then back on. Walk thru the setup wizard. This time give a different SSID name to prevent any wifi devices from connecting. Don't enable Armor or Circle after the wizard completes. Run a speed test from your wired PC using Ooklas installable speed test app. Check results.
