Best way to configure home network of Orbi RBR50 mesh, At&t BGW210 gateway, and apple airport extrem

I have been trying to configure the best network settings for gaming (xbox) for a while now between the Orbi and AT&T router, and have just about tried everything I can think of. I used to get massive ping spikes while gaming every few seconds but with my current configuration have made them much more rare.

Currently i have the At&t BGW210 gateway settings:

Wifi functionality turned off

Packet filtering off

firewall settings off

Do not have any ip passthrough settings for the orbi on (since orbi is acting as AP)

Forwarded all Fifa (videogame) ports for my xbox

Orbi is in AP mode

Since forwarding ports, NAT type went from strict to moderate when tested on my xbox but cannot test in game.

Weirdly, one time setting up an ip passthrough even with the orbi in AP mode and then again setting to AP mode (reassigning orbi's ip?) gave my xbox an open NAT for a day but haven't been able to duplicate that.

This is where i believe issues are being caused, i have only been messing with the orbi and router settings yet my stepdad has a apple airport extreme acting as a router (for some reason). Both the orbi in AP mode and apple airport extreme are hardwired to the at&t gateway. My xbox is connected via ethernet to the orbi.

Network speeds are all over the place and i have tons of problems with gaming. I am not familiar with the apple router but was wondering if i can simply keep the orbi - at&t gateway as is, then set the apple router in some kind of AP mode? Is the apple router the culprit of network problems and my gaming systems nat type?

Any help is greatly appreciated and i will gladly answer any questions. Been stressing with this for months.

  • Your ISP modem configuration would need to be reviewed since it's handling all the routing and NAT configurations there.

Something to contact the ISP about. Orbi is just passing data thru in AP mode.

    • So i ended up trying to see how the network performs if the orbi is in router mode, boom, everything is fixed. Packet loss went down to ~0% when before it was 4-12% and mbps went up close to our ISP's max. But now i have to deal with NAT issues for my xbox. I obviously don't want to put the obi back in AP mode anymore so how can i get my NAT type to open? I am trying to do IP passthrough in my gateway settings to the orbi, but i dont thinkl the IP address listed for the orbi is correct because i can't even access the orbi's settings using that address in my browser. Any tips? Thank you.
