Configuring Mesh Network

Locally most users have existing ADSL/VDSL Modem/Routers supplied by the local Telcom Providers.

When they install a new Orbi RBR20 Router they will connect this to the existing Modem/Router with an ethernet cable running from the Internet socket on the Orbi to a RJ45 socket on the Modem Router.

The existing ADSL/VDSL Modem/Router will be creating it's own SSID and transmitting it's own wireless signal.

Will this interfear with the operation of the Orbi Wireless Network?

    Yes and no.

You can disable the wireless on the modem/router or you can make sure to put the wireless broadcast channels on a different channel.

For example, if the modem is broadcasting on the 2.4ghz channel 1 put the orbi on channel 6 or 11.

Then it won't interfere with yours. (might not help the neighbors having 2 networks)

But if you leave it on the same channels as the orbi, it can interfere.

You can also run into double nat issues.

to fix that, you can put the modem/router into modem only/passthrough mode, put the netgear's ip addres in the modem/routers DMZ, or you can put the netgear in access point mode.

  • We have several systems in the field running 2 wireless networks with no issues. We normally remove 1 network. However, when a customer prefers to have both running we set them As plemans stated, just make sure each network is on a different channel.
