Disabling the 5ghz network

Equipment:

Fritzbox Modem

RBR40 and satellite RBS40

Problem

I want to disable the 5ghz network.  I have disabled the 2.4 and 5 ghz wifi on the Fritzbox, and I have unchecked the 5ghz enable box but I still get some devices connected to the 5ghz network.

refer photo below.

What am I doing wrong?

  • Thanks for that, it appears to work although I have left the broadcast check box unchecked. My phone is now connecting to the 2.4ghz network which is good.

All the other devices that joined the 5ghz network are still on the 5ghz network which is fine.  All these devices are in the same location as the router or satellite.

    Thanks for your assistance.

Orbi systems do not support disabling of the wifi radios. They are always ON.
Can only turn down the power settings is all:

    Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

The original WiFi5 Orbi products had a feature to enable/disable broadcasting the SSID of the 2.4 and 5G WiFi networks:

This feature is not available on the WiFi6, WiFi6E, and WiFi7 products.

The vast majority of Internet of Things (IoT) gizmos connect to mesh WiFi systems with no hassle.  There are some devices that have smartphone apps that are horrible (technical term) and make it nearly impossible to set up a device if the smartphone is connected to WiFi at 5G.

This old Orbi WiFi5 product feature sometimes "comes to the rescue."  Can you please try the following:

    • Disable "Broadcast SSID" on the 5G network and click Apply.
    • On the smartphone, "Forget" the Orbi WiFi network.
    • On the smartphone, Select the Orbi WiFi network from the list of networks, enter the password, and connect.
(What should happen is that devices that were already connected to the Orbi at 5G will remain connected.  The smartphone, having not detected the Orbi 5G signal, should connect at 2.4G.)
    • On the smartphone, perform the device setup using the smartphone app.
    • After the device is working correctly, go back to the Orbi Advanced Tab and Enable "Broadcast SSID" on the 5G network again.

Could you try this and see what happens?

The Broadcast SSID box needs to be checked Enabled.  If there is ever a power interruption, the WiFi system is rebooted, or individual devices are rebooted, they will not find the 5G SSID and will connect to 2.4G.  I am confident this is not what you want to happen.

Turning off the SSID broadcast addresses the issue of getting a gizmo configured, but is only a temporary measure.
