I have the CBR40 and a RBS20 and my satellite is showing less connectivity than my CBR40

Hey all! I need some advice.

I have a CBR40 which came with RBS20. My RBS20 is showing only one bar of signal strength. We live in an old house, but the Router/Modem is about 25 feet away from the Satellite.

I'm trying to decide the best path forward to help my speeds in this house. It's about 1500 sq feet and my current setup is not enough as I work primarily upstairs and connect to the satellite with my computer due to proximity.

We are also thinking to buy a ring outdoor floodlight camera- which will be positioned about 40 feet from the house.

Questions:

  1. Should I invest in another set containing a router and two RBS50 satellites to extend? Will the RBS50 work with my CBR40?
  2. Should I invest in an extender?
  3. What about that outdoor satellite, would that work to get my signal out to the other end of the separate garage?

What parts and pieces do I need to make this work?

Thanks!

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or may not be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? See if this changing any behaviros on the RBS.

You might try getting an EX7500 or EX7700 to connect up as a wifi extender to the CBK40 system. Yes RBS50Y outdoor would connect.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

      • CBR40: V2.3.5.12
      • RBS20: V2.5.1.16

      • Cool- I moved it up higher in the house! It probably only gave me an extra 10 feet, but I'm trying!

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.

      • Got it! Made those adjustments

Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

      • Oof! 14 are showing, half of those are the same network split out for 2G/5G

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or may not be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

      • Got it! I've made these changes

Try disabling the following and see:

      • Armor
        • Verified not on
      • Circle
        • Verified not on
      • Daisy Chain
        • Turned off
      • Fast Roaming
        • Verified not on
      • IPv6
        • Verified not on
      • Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only
        • Haven't done this yet
      • Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes.
        • Done
      • Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

      • Thanks for this tip, I adopted the following
        • Channel 1 for 2.4 Ghz and Channel 36 for Ghz
        • I am concerned I don't know enought about IPs anymore to set a static IP

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? See if this changing any behaviors on the RBS.

      • When I was moving it I ended up having to do this to get it re-synced

You might try getting an EX7500 or EX7700 to connect up as a wifi extender to the CBK40 system. Yes RBS50Y outdoor would connect.

      • Thanks! That is very helpful and I appreciate the confirmation!

      -----------------------

Results from configuration changes and moving the router:

      • It looks like I'm still just getting one bar of connection. :/ Do you think it could be due to the house having plaster, etc? Would the extender help with that or should I seek to try to move the router around downstairs? I think I have about 8-10 feet I could move it due to the cable having some leeway.

Thanks again for the help and advice!!
