Internet Speeds

Spectrum shows my internet speed at 12MBPS upload, 153MBPS download while the ORBI app shows 23MBPS upload 550MBPS download. Why the difference? My connected devices seem sluggish so I’m apt to believe the Spectrum test speeds.

Internet "speeds" vary from one minute to the next.  Spectrum is a traditional "cable TV service" where internet was added with frequencies not used by TV signals.  In those days, download capacity was much more important than upload, so cable providers tended to reserve more of the bandwidth for download traffic.  My Spectrum "Plan" provides a minimum of 200Mbps down and 10Mbps up.  (Speedtest measurements often report 300+ download and 11-12Mbps upload.

Could I ask how Spectrum provided these speeds?  My Android Spectrum app does  not seem to have a way to do this.

It is probably worth asking for more information about "sluggish".

    Hello Bsteph5900,

    Welcome to the NETGEAR Community!

I understand that you are seeing different internet speeds when testing using your ISP speed test and the Orbi app. Speed test results might vary depending on factors like where your mobile device is in relation to your router or mesh system and how many connected devices are actively using bandwidth. If the device performing the speed test is close to your router or mesh system and there are no other devices using bandwidth, you will get better results than if you are far away and other devices are using network resources. Your results can also vary depending on the server your device is using to perform the speed test. Your distance from the speed test company’s server and how much traffic the speed test company’s server is receiving affect your speed test results. For example, if you live in San Francisco, your speed test results using a server in San Francisco will differ from your results using a server in Los Angeles, and the amount of traffic each server gets might also change the results.

    Best,

    Kevin
