Is this the proper set up strategy?
Hi all,
I am slowly moving my RBR/RBS850 setup from having satellites with all wireless backhaul to all wired backhaul. There isn't a ton of info on strategies of where to place satellites that I can find, it's somewhat general, so I wanted to see if I have it right....
For wireless backhaul - I seem to remember reading that you need to find places for your satellites that both (a) get a good WiFi signal and (b) hit areas of the house that need coverage of course. (A central house location is also preferred since it will hit more square footage than in an extreme end of the house, for example.) The key point is - if you don't place an RBS where there is a good signal, it will have trouble syncing and your mesh network won't work well.
But, for wired backhaul, it seems to me having a good WiFi signal is irrelevant, as the RBS will be plugged into Ethernet -> switch -> RBR850 and will sync to the RBR that way. So placement of the RBS devices should be done strictly based on the optimal position in the house to provide WiFi coverage where the signal is poor/non-existent. In addition to just not being useful to place a satellite where there is already a good signal, placing a wired-backhaul-RBS where there is a good WiFi signal may actually cause issues in devices getting confused which mesh device to be connected to, if strong WiFi signals are available from multiple RBR/RBS devices.
So in a way, wireless and wired backhaul are opposite:
wireless backhaul - set up RBS where good WiFi signal exists;
wired backhaul - setup RBS where poor WiFi signal exists, if Ethernet connection available.
Is this accurate? Thanks!
its a pretty accurate way of putting it.
I've moved mine around a ton to try to optimize as I've tested running 1 satellite all the way up to 4 satellites. So if you try different locations, you might find one that works better. Just make sure they're at least 30 ft between router/satellites for proper roaming.
