Thanks, Crimpon. I actually thought that could be the case after I wrote the above. So, I connected the mini to the orbi router and the home LAN appeared! I realize that by connecting the mini to the gateway via a separate port the mini would not know the LAN existed, but going through the Orbi, the LAN now could be seen.

The analysis is correct. The ATT&T gateway has created a private IP subnet and the Orbi router has created another private IP subnet.
To have the Mac Mini be part of the network with the iMac server, it should be connected to the Orbi router and not to the AT&T gateway.
