Managing time limits with Circle and Orbi

I've enabled Circle for my home network so I can monitor the kids interent usage.  Very nice add on for Orbi!

One bit of pushback that I get is that the kids think that the Circle app / Orbi system overstates usage.  For example, I have a limit set for 3 hours/day.  Even though they may not be on their device for 3 straight hours, the system logs the time when the phone or computer are sending traffic through to the internet.  Aside from asking them to just shut off their device, or drop their connection to the internet on the device, I don't know if there is a way for me to set a time for "active" internet use.  Is there a setting that I missed that would track this a little better?

Perhaps this is a better question for a forum on the Circle website, but I thought I would start here.  Thanks for any help from the community.

  • Sounds like good lesson to learn about shutting things down when they are not in use.

That would seem a good lesson, right?  It's a bit more complicated than just "turn off your device" though.  Phones are constantly running, sending out requests for information, downloads, running other programs in the background, etc.  What seems to run the up the usage meter isn't actually "usage".  Turning off the WiFi is a possible fix, but then the phone is digging into data from the cell phone data plan.

Bypassing the lesson for now, I am looking to find out if there is any functionality in Circle that would better manage the usage.

      Thanks for the insight!
