Orbi Connection Drops Often - RBR50 & RBS50
This is our second Orbi set-up, we exchanged the first one at Costco after having connectivity issues, thinking it may have been a defective device. However, my Orbi internet connection is still unstable.
I have an Orbi router and two satellites. The router is connected to a surfboard modem and is set in router mode (not AP). Our internet drops (for all devices on wireless and all devices ethernet connected to the satellites). This happens every few hours to every 30 minutes.
When plugged into my surfboard modem, I get 300-600 mps on my laptop speedtest (even when tested immediately after an Orbi connection drop) so I think I can rule out our service provider and modem as the issue.
I've updated our firmware to V2.1.4.16 AND completed a factory reset. 30 minutes after the facotry reset the connection dropped again and all devices in the house were kicked from the internet.
I'm not that tech savvy, so I'm not sure what else to try. Any ideas? Or should I take this POS back to Costco and get the Eero instead?

What is the model# of the ISP modem? Any Wifi here?
What is the distances between the router and satellite?
What channels are you using? Try manual 1, 6 or 11 2.4Ghz and any channel on 5Ghz.
Any other wifi neighbors near by? If so, how many?
What devices do you have connected to the sytem?
Besure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router?
Modem is a Surfboard SB6190. We are in a city neighborhood, but my iPhone shows between 3 & 10 neighbor networks in range (depending on where I stand in my house).
One sat is about 25 feet from the router - same floor different room and the other is 40-50 ft away on a second floor.
My 2.4GHz is set to auto and the 5GHz is set to 48....should I try changing the 2.4 channel? Would that remove any possible interference from neighboring networks?
We've got a lot connected...3 ipads, 2 phones, Nest, Ring, 3 apple TVs, 2 PCs, 3 laptops, 3 PS4s, 1 PS3, 1 XBoxOne. But obviously not all running at the same time.
On a normal day, we'd have all three kids streaming/gaming on a device (PS4 or iPad) and the adults streaming on an apple TV. However, we also get dropped connections with all kids in bed and just streaming Netflix on an Apple TV.
I'm using the LAN cable that came with the Orbi to connect it the modem and router. Is there something better I can buy?
Side note – as I was responding it dropped connection again. This time 2 hours between dropped connections. This is the 4th drop today….and I’m sure not the last.
I see your set-up uses a non-managed switch? I think I saw that mentioned in another forum but don’t know what it is.
How big is your home? SqFt?
25 feet is too close for a satellite to the router. The router alone can cover up to around 30 feet, depending upon buiding materials.
Can you temporarily disable the closest satellite, power it off and just use the farthest one with the router for now?
Yes, change 2.4Ghz to manual 1, 6 or 11.
CAT6 lan cabling is recommended. Places like deepsurplus or monoprice. Sometimes you might find CAT6 at a local store as well.

- I have had the blizzard app up over the last few days - which is unusual because I don’t play on there often. Interesting that the connectivity issues also increased during the same time. I’ve shut down Blizzard and powered down the sat in the office for now. Thus far internet hasn’t dropped. Is it even possible that Blizzard could be causing the dropped connection? Or is it more likely the sat in the office?
Not sure..Let us know how it goes....
