Orbi RBK40 huge ping variation from PS4 c/w previous Asus N66U

I have an Orbi RBK40 system (2.0.0.56 firmware) which replaced an Asus N66U, connected to a Comcast cable modem. The rest of the system was unchanged. We have a PS4 Pro wired to the Orbi base-station (via a 5-port switch). While in general the network (both wired and wireless) seems more responsive than before, some games on the PS4 are reporting wide variations in ping time which they did not with the previous router (Rocket League, for example, which can display the ping time live, shows ramps from 15ms up to 200+ms and back down again over a continuous ~10 second cycle, and game-play is definitely affected). There is no other major activity on the network at the time (we were deliberately not using any other devices, and I paused the Cloud Sync on my NAS, but it made no difference). My kids are naturally a little frustrated. I looked in the control panel to see if there were any QoS options I could use to prioritize traffic to/from that one device, but there appears to be nothing (it's just an empty page, other than the option to run a speed test). I'm going to try temporarily swapping the old router back in to see if it goes back as it was.

have you tried going directly to the orbi and not using the switch?

I have not, but I can. I will also try Wi-Fi, if only to see if the variations persist, even if the baseline is higher.

Note that the switch is also a Netgear, a ProSAFE GS105, about four years old, and has never been a problem before.

I tried bypassing the GS105 switch, and also switching to Wi-Fi. The baseline ping did not change, but the variation remains. I have looked on-line about Rocket League server ping response and there are many many complaints. Maybe it's just a coincidence. At the weekend I will put the old Asus router back in temporarily to confirm.
