ORBI RBR20
Hi Guys,
I was wondering if someone might be able to help here. I have an IOT device that requires the below wifi configuration and also works on 2.4ghz using b/g 802 protocols. However as this is a IOT it requires its own 2.4ghz SSID would an Orbi RBR20 have issues connecting to this as it seems to be the case at present when connecting to the network. It seems to be the case that when the my Orbi RBR20 is broadcasting it only broadcasts on 5ghz range and isoltating the oribi to only broadcast on a 2.4ghz freequency isn't possible on the the most up to date firmware. Please let me know if there is a way to change this. I have looked at several forums and found that telnetting into router has since been restricted so changing this isn't an option and I'm sure this would void any warranty on my orbi.
Kind Regards
Chris

The device shouldn't care if theres both a 2.4ghz and 5ghz broadcasting. What usually causes issues is the app during setup.
what I've seen people doing to get these setup is to shut off the router and then use a phone's hotspot with the same ssid/password as you router. Get the device setup and then shut off the hotspot. the device should auto-connect to the orbi then.

The IOT device in question with the Orbi RBR20 doesn't have the option to remember SSID credetails than more than one at a time so this isn't an option. The main question here is can I just isolate the RBR20 to run on 2.4ghz as I believe this is what is causing the failure for the IOT to connect?

If you're setting your hotspot with the EXACT same ssid/password as the router, it'll auto-reconnect to the routers ssid when you shut off the hotspot. I've used this numerous times with IOT devices first started having issues with mesh systems.

The Orbi's don't' have the option to separate out the 2.4ghz from the 5ghz. If you search on the forums, you'll find tons of reports/requests for this and its not something netgears implemented. Its actually lazy coding on the IOT devices APP.

Telling us what that IoT toy is might be useful. Many people have turned up here with exactly the same issue for a lot of different gadgets. There may be advice here from someone who has already "been there, done that!"

Another strategy that some people have used is to force the mobile device they are using to set up the IoT thing to connect to the 2.4 GHz band from the Orbi. Then it will be on the same band as the IoT device.
One way to get it to connect to 2.4 GHz is to move away from the router, because 5 GHz has a shorter range than 2.4 GHz. Make it far enough and the mobile will connect to 2.4 GHz.
Another tactic is to tell the mobile to forget that it ever talked to the Orbi. Then work out how to force it so use only 2.4 GHz. (Some mobiles may deny you that option because their makers know how the world should work, and only their way matters.) Connect to 2.4 GHz and again it will be on the same band as the IoT thing.
That shouldn't be necessary, so when you have succeeded send a complaint to the people responsible for that lazy coding.
