Orbi with Lorex Home app not working

I have a Lorex NVR (Model - N842A8).

 

My initial configuration was

- ISP - Comcast; Modem from Comcast; Router - Asus 1900 tmobile

- No open ports on my router; No port forwarding

In this configuration the Lorex Home App was working just fine.

 

Then I switched to

- ISP - Century Link (their ONT device provides an IP); Router - Orbi 960 series

- No open ports on my router; No port forwarding

In this configuration the Lorex Home App doesn't work.

 

I have done a factory reset of the Lorex. And when I try to add the Device Id and enter the admin password of the Lorex device in the Lorex Home app (on my iPhone) I get "Network Error". Am really stuck on how to proceed here.

 

Note that if I just take the ethernet cable and move it back to Comcast + Asus - everything works again.

  • Oh more piece of information.

     

    Century Link uses PPPoE whose user / pass was given to me by Century Link.

    Comast doesnt have a user / pass - just automatic ip.

     

    Note that when I connect Lorex to Century Link I do notice that the Lorex Device gets an IP from my Orbi router.

  • Many home automation systems create their "cloud connection" by connecting through the home router to the vendor's cloud servers (often on Amazon AWS!).  That way, the user does not need to forward any ports or expose anything to the internet.

     

    Can you connect to the Lorex server from a computer on the network (Mac, PC, laptop, etc.)?

    When you move the Lorex from one network to the other, do you power it down, move the cable, then power it up again?

      Right. My guess is that the Lorex device maintains a connection to the Cloud and when the mobile app asks for X, the device is able to send it to the cloud appropriately.

       

      Once I attach Lorex device to new Router I am able to see it as connected to the router with a legit IP. And yes I can connect to the IP and view the cameras and the likes. In fact there is another app from Lorex called Lorex Cloud - using this app I can view all the cameras as long as I enter the IP address of the Lorex device into the Lorex Cloud app. However if I enter the Device Id into the Lorex Cloud app it stops working - because now its going down the cloud path vs local network.

       

      After I connected cable to the new Router I actually did a factory reset. Including power down / up. Didn't solve the problem.

       

      It has to be some config on the new Router ... I think.

        Centurylink gives you a modem router gateway device. It causes a double nat. 

        A double nat happens when you cascade more than 1 router.

        Fixes? There’s 3 options but only use 1.
        1. Put the modem/gateway in modem only/pass through mode. This disables its routing functions.
        2. Leave the modem/gateway in router mode but put the Netgears IP address into its DMZ. This forwards the data to the netgear. You can either leave the modem/gateway’s wireless enabled or disabled. Just make sure its using a different wifi channel to prevent interference
        3. Put the Netgear into access point mode. This disables its routing functions. Wifi/ethernet still works but it does disable some features.
