I need my iPhone and a smart plug to be connected via 2.4ghz in order to set up the device. How do I get my iPhone to connect only to 2.4 when it defaults to 5ghz?

This is a frequent question on the forum.  The vast majority of smart plugs can be set up without forcing the smartphone to connect at 2.4G.  Those DIRE WARNINGS, "MUST have 2.4G WiFi" are similar to "2 AA batteries REQUIRED."  No AA batteries? Can't work.  HaVE A bunch of C  cells, D cells, and coin batteries in addition to AA batteries?  No probem.

So, have you actually tried the setup and simply ignored every time a warning popped up about "must have 2.4G"???  I have found only one smart plug brand that would not set up.

If you actually MUST force the smartphone to 2.4G, this is the recommended procedure:

    • Open a web browser (not on the smartphone) and connect to: http://orbilogin.net.
Log in with the admin credentials: "admin" and admin password (not WiFi password)
    • Navigate to the Advanced Tab, Advanced Setup, Wireless Setup and uncheck the box "Broadcast SSID" on the 5G channel.
    • Press "Apply" and wait for the screen to refresh.  All devices currently connected to the Orbi at 5G will remain connected.
    • On the smartphone, go into settings and "Forget" the Orbi WiFi.
    • Search for WiFi access points again. Select the Orbi WiFi. Enter the WiFi password.
    • Open the smartphone app and set up the smart plug.
    • After the plug is set up, reverse the steps.
    • Go back and check the box "Broadcast SSID" on 5G.
    • On the smartphone, "forget", search, enter password, connect.

Would you mind sharing the brand and model of smart plug?

Thank you. I will try this option. I tried to set it up and it just comes up with ‘setup failure-try again’. I have tried both the normal and AP setup. It is a Feit electric outdoor plug model BPPLUG/WIFI/WP/2. I have set up many smart plugs and devices inside my house with no problem. Thanks for your detailed instructions!
