OrbiRBR20 with Netgear D7000

Just bought Orbi RBR20 to improve signal around the house. Currently have Netgear D7000 Nighthawk modem/router. Will it work with my RBR20?

The short answer is, "yes".  The more complicated answer is, "You have choices."

    1. As long as you do not have too many ethernet devices to plug in (or have a cheap switch),
you can simply replace the Nighthawk with the Orbi and keep the Nighthawk in a closet as a spare.
Give the Orbi exactly the same WiFi name (SSID) and password as the NIghthawk.
All your devices will never know the Nighthawk is gone.
    2. You can ADD the Orbi to the Nighthawk, turn off the WiFi on the Nighthawk, and put the Orbi into Access Point (AP) mode so that the Nighthawk still controls the network and the Orbi simply provides WiFi.

What I did personally (in exactly this situation) was replace the Nighthawk with my new Orbi and connect a cheap 8-port switch to the Orbi so that I could connect all the "office stuff" (desktops, printers, NAS boxes) directly to the Orbi router and let the rest of the house connect over WiFi.

    Does this help?

You need to configure the D series modem for modem mode only. Look for NAT or Router mode features on the D series modems web page. Disable NAT or Router mode.

    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

  • Do you want to keep your Nighthawk functioning as your router and use the RBR20 for your home wifi? That’s what I would do anyway. You can put your RBR20 in AP mode and hardwire connect to your Nighthawk. Disable wifi in the Nighthawk and let the RBR20 and RBS20’s (assuming you have those too) handle the wifi. Should work just fine.
