RBK53 Network Dropping

Hello All

I have a RBK53 set up in my house running V2.7.3.22.

I have Ethernet Backhaul connecting my Satelites to my main router.

I have Virgin Cable with the internet connecting in passthrough mode.  I.e. my Orbi router runs my DHCP and local network.

Recently I have noticed that my local home network "drops" randomly.  By drop I mean that devices report no internet connection.  When looking at the Virgin modem, the internet connection is fine.

Further investigation when this happens proves that my local equipment is no longer able to "ping" the router (192.168.1.1) and the requests either display "Request Timed Out" or display "destination host unreachable" from the IP Address of the local device I am pinging from.

Further investigation has proven that this can happen whether the connected device is wireless or over a LAN network, i.e. it makes no difference.  Connectivity to the ORBI router appears to have dropped completely when this error occurs.

Sometimes this can recover itself after a few minutes, on other occassions I need to reboot the Orbi Router.  As soon as I do this, once back up, the network is recovered.

I try to look at logs on the ORBI but there is no detail available that provides any support whatsover.

A couple of extra considerations:

- I only recently moved to virgin, and dont recall this happening prior to that move (before I had a xDSL connection)

however

- I have carried out a few software updates to the ORBI in similar timeframes, so this could equally be the cause

also

- I did have a situation a few month ago (post virgin install) where the network was regularly dropping and in one particular evening would not recover for any period of time, even with reboot.  In one moment when I was able to login to the router and was clicking around to check things I went to "Firmware Update" and when it tried to load the status one of the satelites appeared multiple times.  I decided at this point to rebuild and refresh the entire ORBI network devices and this recovered the situation.  I no longer see the multiple entries in Firmware Update and the network was more stable.

I am now left with the original situation I describe at the top of the ticket.  I appreciate there is a lot of information here, but wanted to get down everything I think "could" be related.

Many thanks in advance

  • What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

Does the top ring LED turn ON when this happens on the RBR or RBS?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS📡 to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and Orbi system been performed since last update?

Thanks for the response.  Some answers below:

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

      Virgin HUB4 TG3492LG-VMB

This DOES NOT happen when the network goes down.  There is no external indicator on the ORBI to show a problem is occuring

My ORBIs are wired backhaul so not relevant here.

Only one other wifi network is visible to my house

Possibly not no for a whole minute.  Although a few reboots have happened

What mode is thes modem working in? Router or Bridge?

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
        https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
        Couple of options,
        1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
        2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
        3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Regardless of backhaul, distance IS relevant and can impact good operation and cause problems.

Are the RBS directly connected to the RBR or is ther a LAN switch in the middle? If there is a switch, brand and model# please.

A full power OFF by pulling the power adapter should be performed for 1 minute or more.
