RBR20 connecting to new wifi

Changed from ATT Uverse to Xfinity and can't get ORBI RBR20 to connect to the network. Have tried just using reset but device has 'issues connecting'. Shouldn't have to do a new setup, I don't think, but also don't want to delete the device. Suggestions???

  • Using the Orbi web interface to manage the router or the Orbi 'app'?

Generally speaking, it is good practice to turn off both the ISP device and the Orbi router.

Power on the ISP device and let it come up (which may take 2-3 minutes). Eventually the "Network" LED will come on (or something similar)

    Power on the Orbi router.

Open a web browser on a device connected to the Orbi system (wired or WiFi.  We 'old timers' prefer wired hands down, but many users no longer have devices with ethernet ports) and connect to the Orbi web interface.

    Go into the Internet Menu.

Oh, dear. I have never set up an Orbi using the app.  When you mentioned 'Reset', that was simply pressing the Reset key quickly, correct?

Not a Factory Reset which involves pressing something in the tiny reset hole until the power LED turns amber and begins to flash?

I use option #3 myself.  I have a custom router (pfSense) and only want my Orbi's to function as APs.   No problems.  I will say that early on, 20 months or so ago, I had some performance issues with my RBR and RBS20s, but subsequent tweaking and updates seem to have put those issues to rest.  It’s performed solid for several months now.

  • att uses their own gateway that has an integrated router with it. it causes a double nat.

A double nat happens when you cascade more than 1 router.

Fixes? There’s 3 options but only use 1.
    1. Put the modem/gateway in modem only/pass through mode. This disables its routing functions.
    2. Leave the modem/gateway in router mode but put the Netgears IP address into its DMZ. This forwards the data to the netgear. You can either leave the modem/gateway’s wireless enabled or disabled. Just make sure its using a different wifi channel to prevent interference
    3. Put the Netgear into access point mode. This disables its routing functions. Wifi/ethernet still works but it does disable some features.
