RBR50 - Access Control Issue - 2.7.2.104 firmware

I noticed a few days after upgrading the firmware that there were some random dropouts via WiFi. I tried to login to the router with my desktop and received an, "Access Denied," message. I logged in with my phone and noticed the desktop was on the restricted list. After a few minutes, I lost access on my phone and logged in again on my wife's phone. My phone and desktop were both restriced.

Initially, I thought something nefarious was going on buy after reading a few posts, I'm thinking buggy firmware.

I factory reset the router and went over to a temporary home solution (TP-Link M9 Plus) until this is resolved. I was only using the M9 for IoT appliances and the Orbi handled the electronics with important data. The M9 is working fine but is definitely slower.

Back to the Orbi...Is it safe to set it up again or do I need to downgrade the firmware?

Thank you!

  • While researching this issue, I noticed my OpenDNS parental controls was from the firmware, so I downgraded to 2.7.0.70. It was still missing so I went back to 2.6.1.40 and it came back. It looks like there's a lot more going on here than just the first issue I reported.

I tried to downgrade my satellites and only one would take the older firmware. I can't connect to the other two satellites' IP addresses for some reason after downgrading the router so I'll need to figure something out. They appear to be handling the traffic fine on the 2.7.2.104 firmware so I'm not going to kill too much time on it.

The Deco M9 Plus is rock solid so it's staying up for now. I'll post back when I have another update.

  • What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Is the Orbi system operating in Router or AP mode?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or may not be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Hello FURRYe38. I'm confused why any of this would impact the ACL firmware settings.

Application of new FW may have changes some behind the scenes features. Try a factory reset and setup from scratch and see if the ACL problem still happens.

  • I'll have some time tomorrow to get everything setup again. I have 43 devices connected between both networks and the Netgear handles half. It's a real PITA to add all the static IP addresses so it's frustrating.

    I'll post back my results.

It's the buggy firmware -- Netgear, please take this one back to the engineers

  • Same thing here.  Upgraded firmware to 2.7.2.104 and lost login credentials.  I know they're right, cause their auto entered, and of course, I entered them to get to the page to tell it to upgrade.  Now, it's all lost.

Gonna have to reset router.  Argh.

    I hate netgear.
