Slow throughput Orbi

Hi,

I’m struggling with slow wifi speed and would welcome any help please.

I have a modem/router supplied by my ISP which works great (250MB) in close proximity, but has limited Wifi range, hence the orbi.

I have the RBR50 router and satellite, which is hard wired to my ISP’s modem/router.

When I run the QoS speedtest from within the orbilogin webpage I get good speeds (250Mbs). But when I connect to the Orbi wfif I get less than 10% of that (~19Mbs) using speedtest.net. It’s also apparent streaming/downloading

The same thing happens when I run the test from all my devices so it’s not my laptop. I haven’t been able to hard wire my laptop to the orbi as it doesn’t have a LAN port.

I have tried:

  • turning off the wifi on my ISP’s router to prevent interference,
  • switching bands on Orbi,
  • forcing 2.4 or 5GHz,
  • connecting first to Orbi router and then satellite
  • Moving laptop closer to Orbi with clear line of sight
and none of these makes any difference.

When I check with the Mac’s network utility app, it gives me a link speed ( which I think is a measure of throughput) as 54Mbs for the Orbi, and 600Mbs for my ISP’s router/modem

Are these low speeds as good as it gets?

Running MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) OS 10.12.6

Have you tried to enable beamforming and mumimo in the advanced wireless settings?

I have the exact same problems with a brand new Orbi RBK50.

I've have done the enable and disable beam-forming and Mu-MIMO.

I have a gigabit service, QoS shows 400ish speedtest.

I can't get past 20 Mbps on WiFi.

Orbi is in Access Point mode since I have an R7000 as main router.

So I updated the firmware and played around with the channels once more.

Called support, they said updating channels takes 24 hours to register, a reboot doesn't phase it, not sure why?!?

I'm not sure why whenever I test with speedtest.net I see speeds around 35-40 Mbps, but when I use those same devices to test on fast.com I see around 375-450 Mbps...

I had two blips yesterday when the speedtest.net result came back at 426 Mbps, and I have yet to see it again....

All testing is being down in the same room with the Orbi router, which is wired directly with Cat5E run to the R7000 (WiFi) disabled.

Wired test through Orbi Lan ports shows 900 Mbps.
