Upgrading from Google Fiber 1 gig to 2 gig

Have an RBR850 pair with Google Fiber 1gig.  Considering upgrade to 2 gig and they advise me it will not work with any router but their Google Mesh syestem and will not guarantee it will be the same level of coverage as the current RBR850 and I will not have the option to go back.  What am I missing?  How can they dictate how I distribute the signal on my property?

  • Netgear has set up a community forum specifically for the Orbi AX product. Most of the people who watch that forum are more likely to have experience with Orbi AX and know how to work it better than those of us who follow this "general Orbi" forum. Might be more likely to find someone who has a solution if the question is posted there:

    Thank you.

  • FURRYe38 is right on the forums.

But in terms of performance, The rbr85 series is going to stomp on any mesh system google has to offer in terms of performance. Will it max out a 2gig connection? no. But will it get closer than anything out there, yes.

No. Google cannot dictate how you distribute WiFi on your property.  The issue may be that the ethernet port on the Google fiber Optical Network Terminator (ONT) is compatible only with a 10gig ethernet port on a router.

It might be worth looking at the technical specs on Google's 2 gig fiber:

    https://fiber.google.com/2gig/

The new Google WiFi 6 router has a 10gig ethernet port, which would imply that the Google fiber Optical Network Terminator (ONT) will output the full 2 gig in one ethernet connection.

The Netgear RBR850 has one 2.5gig ethernet port.  Thus, it would seem that the RBR850 should be able to connect to the Google fiber ONT and get the full 2gig feed directly.

My guess is that the IEEE standards for 10gig ethernet require it to be downward compatible with lower speeds. Alas, speeds above 1gig are FAR above my level of competence.

Also, with Orbi AX you may see wifi speeds up to 2G however you need a client devices that can connect at 2400Mpbs with 4x4 MIMO Antenna suppport if your ISP supports WAN speeds up to 2.5Gb. You'll never see any thing over 1G on ethernet with Orbi AX since the LAN ports are only rated at 1000Mpbs. I see around 940Mpbs on my 8 series on ethernet with my ISPs 1Gb service plan.
