UPNP not working on RBR20/RBS20 in AP mode

I currently use my RBR20/RBS20 with a HomeHub3000 router from Bell Aliant. The Orbi is in access point mode. The bell router does all routing. This system has worked fairly flawlessly except today when I tried to use UPNP.

UPNP is enabled on the HomeHub 3000. I am serving UPNP via my Synology NAS (tried both Asset UPNP and Minimserver). Client is a hard wired Naim Unitiqute 2. The Naim sees the UPNP servers - so the hardwired network works.

However, when trying to find the UPNP on my iPhone (iOS 15) and iPad (iOS 14), I am unable to find it. Using Naim app it simply doesn’t see it. VLC also does not see it, but does see all my SMB shares. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why it won’t see it?

Troubleshooting steps:
- used Apple camera kit and hardwired my iPhone to Ethernet - it sees the UPNP, so it’s not an iOS thing. It works over Ethernet in both apps.
- uninstall / reinstall apps.
- reboot, reset network

I’m left with two possible thoughts:
- Orbi in AP is not passing UPNP ports
- The Orbi only sees UPNP downstream of it. In my case, my NAS is on a separate LAN port than the Orbi, and thus the Orbi would have to talk back to HomeHub. Should this work on UPNP (my devices do see the HH3000 UPNP, but not the Synology).

I have AP enabled, WMM, WU-MIMO and beam forming on.

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

  • uPnP is something that gets disabled while in AP mode on the Orbi system and only be a pass-thru on the Orbi system.

Also be sure you disable WiFi Private Address feature on Apple devices while at home. This feature seems to cause problems for users.

Thanks for the reply - yes, private Wi-fi address is disabled.

Only other thing I can think to try is hook the Synology into the Ethernet port of the RBR to ensure it’s not a topology issues. That doesn’t make sense to me and won’t be ideal for my setup but I’m trying to eliminate variables.

I’d suspect it’s a Synology problem but the Naim seems able to find it. Sounds like I should stick with streamers that use SMB.

When UPnP is confined to the Local Area Network (LAN), the WiFi router is not involved (neither the HomeHub3000 nor the Orbi [in router or Access Point mode]).  UPnP is a mechanism for devices on the LAN to "find each other" with no user setup:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play

All those multicast packets simply flow through the routers like any other multicast or broadcast packets.

That Wikipedia article mentions potential issues with IGMP snooping. Is there a switch in the network somewhere?

UPnP is mentioned in the Orbi User Manual for the situation where customers want a device on their LAN to be available from the internet. (which is not the case here).  That feature available when the Orbi is in router mode is not pertinent to this discussion.

I suspect the issue lies with the Synology.

Rather than depend on UPnP to find the Synology server, would it be possible to use  the Synology IP address (which I would 'assign' so that it doesn't change)?
