ATT Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot Router LTE Bands

Just got this and set it up. I dont have an external antenna yet  My home has great reception since its on a high ridge with line of sight to horizen. this device locks onto LTE band 12 at -93 dbm in window. Band 2 is also in my area and my smartphones will switch to band 2 put in the window at -99dbm.  band 12 is giving me 25mb down and 5 up on nighthawk.  Band 2 on my smartphones will give 82mb down 20mb up. night hawk refuses to switch to band 2 in my window. Very disappointed at this is there any method to force the nighthawk onto band 2?? Im still waiting for the external mimo antenna but not sure this will help...

Unfortunately, no.  There's nothing in the Mobile App or web based interface to choose a particular band.  Many have been asking for a similar feature.  Though in general most mobile MFG seem reluctant to give this capability.

I assume both bands are on the same tower?  If they were not, some have had success using a directional antenna tuned for Band 2 and pointing it at the tower with Band 2 (UL1850 - 1910  DL1930 - 1990 MHz).  You could also try a 700MHz filter.

Or an amplifier that lets you tune the gain on individual bands -- like this one:

Theoretically, once carrier aggregation is ubiquitious this should be less of an issue.  But, I've not yet been convinced my MR1100 is even doing CA on AT&T yet.  I agree, I often get faster download speeds on my old iPhone 6s.

Ultimately the tower  / band selection algorithms are controlled by the carrier.  They may just want to park on you on a particular band and will bias the device to connect in that order.  This is done on the carrier update file and/or by the tower.

Thanks Jonathan,  Band 2 on same tower. Very interesting. I am not convinced either this device has active CA on it even in the short time I have had it. Think I have seen a  small window high frequency only external antenna for 1700 to 2100. I have to research again and will post the link when I find it.

Keep us updated on if the antenna is successful on making the hotspot lock on to band2. I have a similar problem here
