Best NETGEAR Mobile Hotspot Settings for Gaming?
I've been wondering how much difference the configuration of a mobile hotspot makes when using it for gaming. Download speed seems less important than stable latency and avoiding sudden connection drops, especially during longer gaming sessions.
For those using NETGEAR AirCard or Nighthawk mobile routers for gaming, what settings have worked best for you? Do you normally use Wi-Fi or USB tethering, and have you found any particular settings that improve ping stability?
I'm especially interested in hearing from users who play games on laptops or Android devices through a mobile hotspot.

For gaming over a mobile hotspot, I would prioritize latency consistency and connection stability rather than maximum download speed.
If the device supports it, using a stable 4G or 5G mode can sometimes be better than allowing the hotspot to constantly switch between network modes.
For a laptop, USB tethering is worth testing because it removes the Wi-Fi connection from the equation. If using Wi-Fi, 5 GHz is usually a good choice when the gaming device is close to the hotspot.
I would also check signal strength, network congestion, and whether the hotspot changes cellular bands during gameplay. Running a continuous ping test while changing one setting at a time can help identify which configuration provides the most stable connection.
For longer gaming sessions, keeping the hotspot cool and connected to reliable power can also help prevent performance issues.
I would agree with George2121. For effective gaming using a Mobile Hotspot you really need a very good Signal Strength (maximum 5 bars!!) and the input ping latency no more than 20ms and low jitter using 5G. It is very difficult for most to be close enough to a cell mobile tower to have this luxury. No equipment will provide these minimum requirements unless you are very close in direct sight of mobile cell tower. Also you have to rely on the reliability and output of that service providers service from the tower closest to you.
Serious gaming requires a fixed Fibre Optic landline that generally has 0ms latency and has consistently reliable high download & upload speeds.
I'm lucky - I have an excellent 5G cell tower 135m direct line of sight that "melts" my equipment teeheehee : )
Hi lucassilva11. Sorry for the double post. No edit function on this forum. I use a Netgear M6 Pro router and sits in direct line of site to my cell tower approx 135m or 443 feet away from cell tower. I have the battery removed and powered by the Netgear supplied power supply and set to Maximum Performance. I also utilise the M6 Pro Ethernet port via a 2.5G switch hard wired to PC when Gaming. I can get 18ms latency and 35 jitter not bad at all for a Mobile Router solution.
