Considering Router and modem upgrade but want to try mode change first

Hi - Really starting at basics - I am considering a new router and perhaps modem as I have not upgraded either in years. I do need to upgrade my firmware, but can I simply change the mode from 56 Mbps to Up to 300 to see what happens? I rely on this router for work. Might just chnaging the setting negatively impacting any connected wireless devices? I realize there are other factors and it may not help. I do not have my PC hooked up via ethernet right now so won't do firmware until I find a cable. The issue I am trying to solve is that I need more than 18 to 20 Mbps download. Netflix 4k on one device takes most of it. Thanks.

    You can make that change without much issues.

    but you're correct in that you need an upgrade. If you're streaming 4k, I'd recommend upgrade to at least something with 5ghz for higher throughput
