this is an ATT branded device. They provide the firmware for this, not Netgear. Your device firmware updates are from ATT servers, and it will not update unless your device is on an ATT network. Because firmwares are from ATT, nobody can provide it here for you, officially.

Downloads will definitely be slow because the bands on this device most likely is not a good match for your providers in Europe, or any other provider that is not ATT. It's probably connecting only to one or 2 bands, likely LTE, not 5G

Not so much in terms of 5G standards, but rather what frequencies (or bands) your provider uses. ATT uses specific bands and it it not very common for other carriers to have all the same bands in their network. This device is cheaper because the bands on this device are specific to ATT, and is much fewer compared to an unlocked device like an MR6150 or MR6550.

You can't. If your European carrier happens to have the same LTE and 5G bands that are also supported by the MR6500, then the MR6500 will only use those bands. There is no way to "open" other bands. You have to buy an unlocked device like the MR6150 or MR6550 if you want wide compatibility for your hotspot.
