NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 Pro - Hotspot for exams

Hi,

I have internet that can sometimes be terrible, especially with power outages, so I got a NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 Pro for a hotspot to take online proctored exams. Sometimes these exams are over two hours long. How can I setup my Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro that runs off of battery so it stays on for greater than 2 hours? I plan on having my computer within 10 feet of the device.

Here are the settings I will be using with battery power:

I have remember my password for my Macbook

Internet Connection - Mobile Cellular (cellular provider)

Band - Dual Band (2.4 and 5 GHz)

Wifi Signal is on

Wifi Range is long

Wifi Standby is Never

Power Mode is Performance

Airplane mode is off

APN is my cellular provider's broadband

Domestic Data is On

Roaming Data is Off

Status is Connected (when connected to it)

Screen TimeOut is 1 min

Wife Info on Home - Show

English for default language

Ethernet is On (should I turn this off?)

USB Tether is On

GPS is off

Software Updated as of today

Please let me know what adjustments I need to make to those settings.

  • While many questions about routers are generic and could be answered anywhere, some things need specialist knowledge.

You might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:

    Mobile Routers, Hotspots & Modems

Those things are very different from the standard Netgear routers covered in this section.

You might like to search there for messages related to your problem.

I will ask the Netgear moderator to move your message.

In the meantime you could visit the support pages:

    Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware. Look at the label on the device for the model number.

    Check for various troubleshooting tips.

You may have done this already. I can't tell from your message.

I mention it because Netgear stopped supplying printed manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

If you just use one WiFi client during the test, the battery can last  more than 2 hours for sure. You can just use the default settings.

But it is better to make sure the location you take the test has good cellular coverage. You can go to check before the test.

    Thanks

Thank you. Would setting the wifi standby mode to never ensure that my computer stays connected throughout the exam?

If your laptop keeps connected to M6 WiFi, it will not go to standby. The standby timer is triggered when there is no clinet connected to the device by WiFi. But to be safe, you can set the standby timer to Never.

        Thanks
