New home wifi help

I'm not very adept at IT and its terminology.  I just bought a new house.  The house has cable internet. I have an old Zoom router/modem.  The only room that has wifi coverage is the living room where Zoom modem lives so I picked up a Nighthawk router to pick up the slack everywhere else.  The problem is that now in the living room there is one wifi address and everywhere else has the 3 addresses from the Nighthawk (connected to the modem with an ethernet cable).  I would like there to be only one or two wifi addresses across the whole house.  Is there a setting that allows me to do this. Currenlty, if I leave the living room I have to disconnect from the weak signal and manually connect to a stronger signal.  I would like one continuous signal throughout the home. Is anyone able to advise me on how this is feasable.

Thank you,

Kal

  • Sounds like the Orbi system would work well for you. Costco has the router plus 2 satellites on sale for $350 until 9/2. I just picked up the system and it's awesome so far. Fast speeds and full wifi service all over the house.

    Hello Retired_Member,

Glad to hear you were able to pick up a Nighthawk! As Jay26 mentions below, an Orbi system would work great as well! In regards to your issue, I have a few questions:

    1. Is your modem/router set to modem only mode? If not, you may contact you ISP to help you with this and you will be able to use your router in router mode.

    2. Where is the 3rd IP address coming from? I would assume the other 2 are coming from the Zoom modem and the Nighthawk router.

    3. Can you confirm what kind of Zoom modem/router and Nighthawk router you are using? (Product Model Numbers)
