Nighthawk AX3600 M6 Pro Mobile router

This router overheats when operating without a battery. That is, it significantly (very hot to touch) when connected through Netgear-supplied cable and adaptor/transformer.

The battery was taken out because it was close on useless: it didn't hold its charge for more than a couple of hours, and the router became hot to touch quite often when used with the battery.

I live about 50 Km from the centre of a big Australian city and the router still drops out: six times over a period of 2 hours during a Teams meeting recently.

The possibility of fire terrifies me.

  • They do get very hot. It is due to the 5G chips by Qualcomm that are being used in these mobile hotspot. It is very unlikely to catch fire because as you have mentioned it will shut itself down when it gets too hot. But I agree it can be a big nuisance if it keeps dropping the connection. Unfortunately this is a known thing and that's why there are temperature mitigation features in the firmware. Best you can do is to provide a fan to constantly blow ambient air into the back of the device to help it cool off and blow off enough heat so it does not get hot enough to trigger a disconnect.
