Nighthawk M1 connect to LAN (ethernet cable)

Try WiFi OR ETHERNET offloading feature and see whether that is what you need.

It does look like that I can hook it up to my wifi network and make it function as a backup in that way. but not when I connect it to my network using the lan port.

 

I tried the 'IP passthrough' setting, but that doesn't work at all.

 

Any suggestion is welcome.

If you want to do this seamlessly, you want to look into routers with failover or load-balancing functionality.
