Nighthawk M1 MR1100-100EUS: unable to access the SD card using the SMB protocol

Yesterday I bought a Nighthawk M1 MR1100-100EUS from Amazon Germany (i.e. the unbranded retail version sold in Europe). It immediately suggested an OTA update after which the device and firmware version numbers are as follows:

Hardware Version:	1.0
Firmware Version:	NTG9X50C_12.02.07.00
GUI Version: MR1HDATA_04.01.59.00
PRI Version: 03.02
Bootloader Version:	NTG9X50C_12.02.07.00
Firmware Build Date:	2018/03/05

I put a NTFS formatted µSDXC card into the respective slot and copied a .mp4 file to it using the web interface (http://192.168.1.1/index.html#dav). I can watch this video clip from inside the web browser and also with the VLC video player using UPnP access, so the M1 definitely handles the SD card properly.

But according to the user manual I should also be able to mount this storage by accessing smd://192.168.1.1 (I am on a Mac) by connecting to it from the Finder. This does not work for me, neither on OSX 10.11 "El Capitan" nor 10.13 "High Sierra". The error message is unspecific.

On a Windows machine one should be able to connect using \\192.168.1.1 — does this work for anybody?

Thank you very much for your support, Jason!

Actually I made a little typo in my original post above where I wrote smd://192.168.1.1 — it should of course be smb:// and not smd://

But I cannot connect to smb://192.168.1.1 either, so everything else I wrote still holds true.
