Nighthawk M5 excessive data consumption
I've recently purchased a nighthawk m5 which is for 5g mobile broadband through our local telco Telstra.. For the first 3 months we’ve consumed our combined 580g data by the 3rd week?! Seems excessive as we never reached the 500g limit on our previous telco provider which was also 5g. We also only stream Netflix and music, no gaming or similar. You can’t add data packs to their plans either so we get throttled for a week or so, we need to work out if we have an issue??
any suggestions? One friendly person suggested asking the netgear community as they've had packet issues in their previous nighthawk models... Telstra forum with nighthawk issue

I would recommend to use the data limit setting in Windows 10/11 : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/set-your-data-limit-031dcc15-fa0f-ad39-8e60-634500585630
Do the same for your phone :
Iphone/Ipad : https://appletoolbox.com/control-limit-cellular-data-use-iphone-ipad/
Android: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2819524?hl=en
Keep also in mind that streaming in Full HD,4K consumes more data https://help.netflix.com/en/node/87
Try also to see for a firmware upgrade : https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/MR5000/MR5000_UM_EN.pdf (page 48 of this manual). netflix (and a couple other streamers) can dynamically change what resolution you're streaming in based on the bandwidth you have.
One issue you might see is that because the M5 is more capable than the last hotspot you had, netflix could be using more data because its recognizing that the bandwidth is there to do so. Maybe you were only streaming 1080p and now are streaming 4K.
Tough to tell without being there but it might be worth checking into reducing your netflix settings if you're on a limited data plan.
