Nighthawk Router - too much latency for my work phone

I moved to a rural location and there is too much latency in the service to run my work phone (runs through work VPN). I purchased the NightHawk router with AT&T plan but the latency is still above 400 ms.

Any suggestions?

  • Mobile plans are going to have more latency than hardwired like dsl/fibre/cable.

Is that latency what you get when you're testing not running through your vpn?

Or is that with the vpn active?

Because there isn't much to change with mobile plans as its basically on the mobile ISP for latency.

You could check on something like starlink as I've heard it has better latencies.

      It's running through the VPN.

StarLink isn't yet available in my area.

We tried satellite service and it was horrible. We couldn't even stream on YouTube. We're pending dsl installation from BrightSpeed (CenturyLink) but it's costing $1,500 to run a line to the house and they need to wait until the ground thaws. A neighbor said the service isn't great so I honestly don't know if that will solve my issue. I need latency under 400 ms.

What latency and speeds do you get without the VPN running?

Because if your speeds are fine without it, the vpn is the issue.
