Share internet with 2 networks
I want to add a separate network for a couple security cameras. But I want both my PC network and my security camera network to have internet access through my cable modem.
I was thinking a smart switch with two VLANS and one trunk port that goes to the router but do I need a layer 3 switch or can a layer 2 switch do that?
I have an Asus RT-87R router but unfortunately it does not support setting up wired VLANS on its internal switch ports so i will have to buy a managed switch.
Thanks,

If you think VLANs, there are two ways of doing it and inter-VLAN routing plays a big role here. Inter-VLAN routing can be done on the router or switch level. The former one requires a VLAN-aware router, best a router without WiFi and a separate WiFi access point. A VLAN-aware switch is not a must here, but it is often used. I think it is a good choice for a small network with moderate performance requirements. It is also relatively easy to set up and affordable. The latter one requires a capable, not just any, L3 switch and a router supporting static routes. It is a good choice when higher performance or flexibility is required. However it is considerably more difficult to set up and expensive if done right. More research and planning wound be required when implementing a L3 switch solution.

Thanks for your reply but I may have found a simpler way to do this.
I am going to make a Blue iris server with two network cards. One NIC will interface with my normal network and be used to view the cameras and the other network card will be on a different IP range and will stream the video to the Blue Iris server.
