GS308EP - not visible in my avm Network overview

This is more a limitation of the way the AVM routers and probably other AVM devices as well as other router vendors are keeping track of attached devices, and how these maintain the network overview.

A device like the Plus switches can indeed use DCHP to get an IP config, and the AVM routers initially could learn about the existence on the network. Later on, these switches -never- connect to the Internet, so these don't appear on the logic of the AVM network environment. The only moment the AVM router (and so the AVM Network table) could be updated is the moment when the DHCP client on the Plus switch does refresh or renew the DHCP lease - this event is however not enough for the AVM logic. The complete AVM Network view depends on the regular update of the router NAT table. A device not talking to the Internet on a regular base does cease to exist from the logic.

Interestingly, most of these complaints are coming from a German speaking market where people often have complained about devices "calling home" - something the Netgear Plus switches don't do on their own. There are equally no DNS requests or NTP accesses to the Internet, too.

And at the same time, users from these markets are also reporting their Netgear Plus switches (like these GSxxxE[P[P]], GXxxxEMX, MSxxxEUP, XS7xxE[M]) are curious why the beloved AVM Network map remains incomplete in this aspect.

Some of these Plus switches are marking their presence on the network by multicasting SSDP announcements to the network, making it possible to be enumerated in the Windows Explorer Network environment, or to some Apple applications tracking Bonjour announcements (equally SSDP)- This is again not sufficient for populating the AVM Network view, too.

Only systems actively polling the network are able to discover and enumerate such infrastructure data collections - the AVM Network map design isn't (often mistaken) one of these either.

An application allowing to find these devices is the Netgear Switch Discovery Tool, making use of the proprietary Netgear Switch Discovery Protocol (co-developed initially with Realtek Semiconductors Corp. when I have the history correct, and in similar use by other device makers, too.).

Sorry for destroying the dream that a consumer router maker like AVM does have a complete network monitoring map or tool.
