Netgear GS116ev2 - IP Conflict

Hi,

I have the following setup

Virginmedia SuperHub 3.0 in Modem Mode -> TP Link Archer C80 Router -> Netgear GS116Ev2 Switch -> Various devices

I'm experiencing multiple issues (wired & wireless) when I have the router connected to the switch

  1. When my laptop (wired via the switch) is booted on - the router DHCP is not assigning an IP address.  If I disable/enable the ethernet adapter on the laptop it will successfully obtain an IP address from the router.  If I disable/enable the adapter again it reverts back to the laptops randomly assigned IP address (if i continue to disable/enable it effectively switches between the two IP's turning my internet on/off, i.e. it's not random it will be initially off, then on, then off, on, and so on)
  2. The switches 'Located on IP Network' setting will switch to the Laptop's IP (when I'm unable to obtain address from the router, i.e. neither my laptop or the switch will be on the network) to the IP address assigned by the router (when i'm able to obtain an address from the router)
  3. If I wire my laptop directly to the router, this does not happen - it only ever obtains the IP address as assigned by the router

This is a problem, because everytime i reboot my laptop, i have to disable/enable to network adapter to get connected to the internet.

I have deleted all network list profiles (with the exception of the one that works) from the registery - and in this case Windows 10 creates a new network (which doesn't connect to the internet) whenever I reboot or disable/enable the ethernet adapter which it then connects to initially until i disable/enable the adapter

Another issue is that my phone, when it loses it's wifi connection (i.e. is out of range) it's unable to obtain an ip address from the router when it's back in range - I have to reset network settings on the phone (not just 'forget the network') in order to be able to  reconnect to the internet (note that it does connect to the Wifi, but the IP address is not on the network connected to the internet)

Whilst you may think this is a router/dhcp issue, whilst trying to figure out where the problem was i have disconnected all devices, including the switch from the router, created a new SSID for the router and connected just the phone to it ( after this it worked as per normal (having left the wifi range and returned) until I connected the switch back to the router, at which point once i need to reset my network connections on the phone again

I've tried factory reset on the switch with no results.

DHCP Mode is 'Enable' on the switch (and i can see that it is getting an IP address from the router as i can configure it via browser)

Firmware is 2.6.0.24

All other settings are as per the defaults.

Any help would be appreciated!

Regards,

Gavin

  • Turns out it was a rogue DHCP server in my Horizon set top box that was wired to my router, causing IP conflicts.  Once I disconnected the set top box from the router (this was how Virgin Media originally set it up, which I had emulated on the new router), the problems disappeared!

There is nothing on these switches what can impact L3, including the DHCP part.

Unless the switch is massively broken or malfunctioning - what is unlikely - it can't impact the complete network that heavily, certainly not on it's own.

Can't see any indication of an IP conflict in the problem description. Decent computers will fall-back to zero config addresses (169.254.x.x) if the DHCP process fails.
